Re: Pre-Historic Question
No, it's not an R0. It's a Classic. This is an old misconception and sellers will use this as their sales pitch, but a Classic (though a very nice guitar) is not a pre-historic re-issue, and was a lower end guitar compared to the re-issues. Below is a 1990 / 1960 pre-historic re-issue (same one as my avatar. The classics have a smaller headstock, typically un-covered pickups and are marked in the pickup route. Some folks have gone so far as to change the pickguard / truss rod cover and sell Classics as re-issues outright. Always call Gibson and confirm what it is by the serial # to be sure. If the price is reasonable a Classic is a great guitar, it's just not considered a re-issue, and does not command the same $$.
Hope that helps

Re: Pre-Historic Question
To me, the biggest difference, besides the appearance, is that the Pre Historics have solid bodies and the Classics are weight relieved. Not saying one is better than the other, just stating a difference.

Re: Pre-Historic Question
That sounds about right, but I'd check with someone else up here that is familiar with current prices for these. I checked G-base and that looks to be in the ballpark, but could not find a 1991 gold top to compare apples to apples. From the pics it looks to be in great shape.

Re: Pre-Historic Question
I would offer $1500.00 and see if they go for it. It's a buyers market right now, so it's no harm asking.

Re: Pre-Historic Question
Check. With Gibson +1. It might be a limited edition because it has a gold finish on the back. I would offer a little less and tell him you need a couple days to have it checked by a good luthier.

Re: Pre-Historic Question
Thats just the way the early GT Classics were, all gold. It only lasted for a year or two.

Re: Pre-Historic Question
If you have the serial # call Gibson directly at 1-800-4GIBSON (1-800-444-2766) - they seem to take forever to respond to email, but they are very helpful by phone.
