Speak now, or hold your peace
Considering whether to pull the trigger on a cool LP (edited out as I'm getting tantalizingly close and a little paranoid now). If you see any reason why it doesn't constitute a good deal or you see some other factor I may have not considered about the guitar, please speak to me. This would be my first LP and I'm buying online without playing first (scary stuff).
I often wonder why what seem to be such great guitars are often bought and offloaded onto the used market so quickly without hardly being played. The first owner obviously really disliked it for some reason. That worries me I must admit, particularly as I would be buying without playing it first. I use a Mesa DR + Recto 4 x 12 cab and wonder if a fat sounding LP (as per tone report) would be too muddy as this amp/cab combo can tend to the mud at times. It seems to tick all my boxes though. I think the neck would be good for me. I'm playing mostly metal and hard rock, but love playing everything from jazz to country to blues for fun here and there. I don't want a thin LP tone so it sounds good. Don't want a chambered one or a lightweight I don't think, I do want some beef. Just wondering if it could be too bass heavy. My Explorer has this tendency through the DR. The Explorer is great for jackhammer rock chords but when you start playing open chords and barre chords the bass really sqaushes the mids and highs. I got turned onto RIs when shopping for a 2008 Std. Played an R8 and cannot go back. The wailing sustain and complex tones on higher bends blew my mind. R6 with P90s was also very nice, not quite as rock as the R8, but sweeter. Love to own both (dream). Hoping this LP may be just my cup of tea. It is a lot of money to me and I really want to get one LP for life, hopefully at the first attempt. I have a Strat for the thinner tones and to mix tones up for recording. I am close, but nervous. Is there nothing to fear but fear itself?

Re: Speak now, or hold your peace
Looks to be a nice guitar at a reasonable price. An R7 goldtop with a 60's neck is a custom order, so if you prefer a thinner neck you should grab this one because you may never find another.

I think you can't go wrong with this guitar. Good weight (meaning not too light), good price.
Main thing is the neck size. That is a very rare neck size on an R7 Goldtop. if the neck works for you, grab this guitar fast. |

Re: Speak now, or hold your peace
if you find the mesa a bit dark and undefined id say try a different cab.... mine makes any head sound allittle to muddy for me. love greenbacks now. i remember when i first switched and really started to appreciate the clarity now i don't know how i played that. i use it for bass.

Thanks a lot. Heard a lot of good things about him now and am getting closer to lift off, thus the edit of my original post. The paranoia sets in! Skittish.

Re: Speak now, or hold your peace
I've bought two guitars from Mark. His tone reports are dead on and cut out most (if not all) the guess work that comes with buying a guitar on-line. Why don't you just give him a call, tell him what amp you're using and ask if he think it'll be too muddy? (provided he's played a Mesa DR). I know he's honest. He'd rather sell you the right guitar than just sell you a guitar.

Re: Speak now, or hold your peace
Just received my first LP. A beautiful R7 GT with a 60 neck from Mark's Guitar Loft. Mark was a gem to deal with and the guitar is awesome. One very happy camper here.
It is highly appropriate that the guitar arrived this morning as I'm off to see Stone Temple Pilots tonight. The planets are in alignment. |
