You notice how much louder and clearer John's guitar is in this mix? I don't know if it's the way it was recorded or if the Epi was just louder, but frankly it sounds better than the paul IMO

John Lennon seriously looks like Chris Robinson.

Black Beauty's are known to be pretty dark sounding, due to the all mahogany config. So it probably doesn't cut through the mix as well.

With that said..it seems like until he solos the engineer kept his guitar pretty low in the mix.

I actually love the tone of all mahogany customs, especially Jimmy Page's three pick up black beauty, but i never buy them due to the weight. I agree with you though, it sounds like Eric's low in the mix until the solo's, the tone is phenomenal, i just found it odd that it's so quiet.

My neighbor has a Strat that must clock in at at least 8.5 lbs.

8 pound les paul custom? I am envious my friend, however I'm a bit of a weakling, I don't know the official weight on my R8 but i figure it's in the high 8 pounds low 9 pounds, and that's a little too heavy for me, I actually did start playing on strats, i love les pauls and their tone but frankly my playing is better suited for a semi-hollow electric, i never know why i never buy one, i guess i just love the les paul feel too much haha.

My friend has a really heavy american strat, heavier than his R9 which isn't really on the light side either

PS anyone know in that John Lennon show with Clapton, John was throwing up all day before he went on, it really shows in a couple songs, I have no idea how I would get through a gig sick, scares me half to death. Kudos for John for going on with the show.
