Guitar ad says VOS 1959 serial number says VOS 1958 2008

Do i understand this correct?
LPR9 = 1959 reissue
LPR8 = 1958 reissue

Local online seller here in europe got a "VOS 1959 2009".
But the guitar might be a VOS 58 reissue from 2008.

Is it possible to date the VOS with the last digits?
This might be a 2008-12-07 or a 2008-07-12 1958 VOS if i recall the digits correctly.

Don't think you can date a historic to a specific date, there's only a production number, you have to check with Gibson to get the date.

It shows the year and model clearly though.

See it here:

Nope. I tried that once and they said they don't know production dates on historics.

So I guess the only way is to estimate the production date roughly by knowing how many historics were done in total for that whole year?

Then again, I'd imagine even that could be misleading a lot...

You date the guitar with the FIRST digits!
If the serial number starts in 8 it is an R8
If the serial number starts with a 9 its an R9
A 2009 R9 would be 9 9XXX
A 2008 R8 would be 8 8XXX

What does the serial number start with?

So i might be correct about the one being a R8 from 2008 and not a R9 from 2009 like tha ad says?

Thanks for the help!

Yes, it's definitely an R8 if the serial begins with an 8.

You are correct. Will you be "educating" the seller now? I hope so!

I bought the R8 guitar from him
Managed to get it for 40% of the store price.

He acctually had a nice Lemon burst R9 and some other stuff!

Nice guy that just played guitars and didnt bother if its a "this or that" "bumble bee caps what?"

Ill guess when you make that kind of money that he does you dont have to bother about toys.

Will post R8 NGD soon.
