Are R8's as Good as R9's ???

I've heard rumors from certain people that R8's are made with a lesser quality wood than R9's ? I'm wondering if the Custom Shop does anything different between a 58 or 59 reissue ? or if it's all just about the flametop vs plaintop thing ? Do you guys think an R8 is just as good as an R9 ?? I personaly love the fatness of my R8 neck and have not heard a better sounding historic than it !!!

Yes.. R8's are every bit as good as an R9...but not my R9!
I've played around 20 to 25 R7s, R8s & R9s. Mine still sticks out, she's unique!

Re: Are R8's as Good as R9's ???

R8's are just as good except for the cosmetic feature of the flame on the R9's. And some R8's have flame so the point is moot in those cases. But strickly speaking for myself, my R8 has tone and plays like butta!! (So does the R9 actually)

Here's a pic of my '02 '58RI that justifies what stinger says. This '58RI fiddle back top is as good as any '59RI i've seen.

Re: Are R8's as Good as R9's ???

It's a matter of finding the good apples. I helped my friend search for quite some time for the R8 that spoke to him. I had a similar quest with my R9. At the end of the search, they are very similar sounding. The R9 just looks a little more dressed up for the dance. They both have it where it counts.

Whoa! I'd play the game too BoBo , but you missed out a vital variable from the equation... The R0 ! So I can't vote.
Go back and amend the score board and the initial question to include R0, then I can place my vote on the most superior Historic of all..

Seriously though, very nice looking guitars you have there BoBo. ( Just a pity about the necks ) ....

Re: Are R8's as Good as R9's ???

In my experience, the only difference that matters to me is the weight.

When I worked in a guitar store. Almost every R9 was notably lighter then every other model. You could tell that someone took the time to pick the wood.

That reason alone is why I want to own an R9. Not to say the others are dogs. But IMO, you do get a bit better of a guitae for the upcharge, if by better you mean lighter and a figured top. Tone wise, thats entirely another ball game.

I agree, one thing you pay the extra $$ for is weight...but I'm sure there are some R8s out there that weigh less than a few R9s.
Mines 8lbs 3oz...that's light!

The way I see it, if you were to compare the R8/R9s to exotic sports cars.
It's like having a F430 Spyder that does 220 mph and another that does 221 mph.

btw: I love that R8 Bobbo!!

Re: Are R8's as Good as R9's ???

Bobbo, that's honestly my favourite R8 out of all the ones I've seen online.
Nothing against the other R8s, but that one floates my boat.
Even though I have a Washed Cherry R9, a Washed Cherry R8 is definitely in my future.

I love this pic. There's something about a plain top that looks like serious rock n' roll guitar.. Yes Sybil and Humph. God! what a couple they's make. I hope she doesn't nag.

So what about adding the R0 to your voting list.. There are quite a few abstaining from this vote..Me for a start.
