NGD: 2002 Washed Cherry R8
![]() ![]() bought to play....and it plays like a dream! I'm not totally sure about the classic 57 pickups yet...LOVE the dark board! looks as dark as the ebony board on my 72 LP Custom...the neck is chunky and fat and I play classical guitar so no problem at all...been looking for a nice flame top R8 for a while.. |

Re: NGD: 2002 Washed Cherry R8
Holy smoke. Never yet seen a 2002 that wasn't killer. Great colour, great wood!
It is a nice fingerboard - and in the close-ups of the top, that really show the cross-grain well, it looks to me a lot like there are strong mineral flecks in the top. Isn't that a sign of a nice piece of Eastern Maple? Anyway, it's really beautiful.

Re: NGD: 2002 Washed Cherry R8
thanks guys...
I havent seen many exotic tops on R8's this is one of em' the close ups give the impression that there is a slight 'orange peel' going on but that isn't the case...the guitar is smooth and clean. The classic 57 pickups have a bit more gain and bite to them compared to my Throbak 102LTD Peter Green pickups in my 72 Custom. They are definitely more 'harsh' with less definition. It lends well to playing heavier rock...I havent decided whether to change them out yet... |

Call Gibson and tell them the number, you may have burstbuckers. I call about my 2001 R8 and they told me that the transition year for burstbuckers was 2001. That might be why they sound harsh. 57 classic are known to be smooth, not harsh.

and I might be a bit of a tone snob as they arent harsh per se...just harsh compared to the Throbak pickups which are incredibly articulate sweet with warm complex overtones and less gain overall ![]() it might be the maple top compared to the mahogany of the old Custom....I dont know if I change the pickups that I want two guitars that sound close to identical....having a biting monster in the arsenal might be a good thing. |
