newbie with a new R8

Hi guys, im a newbie here so go easy on me!

just bought myself a brand new R8. I've been searching for a les paul for ages now and i finally decided that the R8's were the ones for me, went to a shop over the weekend and got to try 5 of them and picked out the best one. I was pretty lucky for a UK shop to have that many Historic Les pauls in! This thing is a beauty! looks great, feelsl ike ive been playing it all my life and sounds fantastic!

I'll post some pictures up as soon as i have the time to take ones that do it justice!

so im wondering if you can help me with a couple of things. Firstly, ive already got a number of pick sratches around near the tggle switch i'd imagine from switching pickups with the pick in my hand. what is the best way to treat these on the VOS finishes?

Secondly, its a tobacco burst finish, i really like it because the outer (darker part is less black and more of a deep red. Im thinking it would look even better if the outer part was faded more so there was less of a contrast between the middle and the edge, is there anyway of acheiving this?

thanks in advance!

Re: newbie with a new R8

I have an r9 that had the VOS finish. It scratches really easily and the neck gets "gunky" and sticky. I used Maguires polish (car polish, they also package guitar polish for Fender). I think it's the same stuff with a Fender logo on it. It took off the VOS and shined up my guitar. I'm thrilled to death with it and the guitar looks even better than it did. Since I polished it, I have not noticed any pick scratches (I took off my pick guard too).

Re: newbie with a new R8

thanks for the info, would regular guitar polish work in the same way? the problem is that i really like the vos finish so im not really looking to add any more shine to the guitar, just treat the scratches and keep the vos look. I'll definitely keep the polish in mind for the neck though.

Re: newbie with a new R8

I'm not sure of that. I think that most (or all) polish has a mild abrasive and they will shine it up. You might want to go on gibsoncustom.com and go into their forum. The administrator usually follows up pretty quickly and I'm sure they have a recommended polish. Of course you will be limited to the Gibson brand polishes and they will probably tell you to use the "pump polish" which most of the feedback on this forum says it sucks. Unfortunately, you have to decide which route to go. Again, it did shine my guitar (not to "glossy" status, but shine nonetheless, but I loved the way that Maguires worked on my guitar. GOOD LUCK Man!

Re: newbie with a new R8

Sorry i took them very quickly with my camera phone so they arent the best pics! they dont really show off the grain and in person the colours are more subtle than they appear in the pictures, gives you an idea though. the guitar was from Coda music in Stevenage like i said in my intro topic . I love this guitar i cant put it down! everyone in the shop even commented on how good this one sounded.
