Re: Show your Lemons!

It's funny how you never see these kinds of tops in G/C or Sam Ash or where ever. I think all those get picked up by Managers, and employees.

Thank You so much for the compliment Stinger! Thats what drew me to the
guitar. That and totally GASSIN for a 59 Historic and for myself I got a good one.
Nice and fat but balanced out. It challenges me also. EX. "If your playin' me, you better bring it!"
The top gives me the vibe that it's ALIVE

I know what you're hinting at. Some of the Lem's have no red at all, some have a hint of really faded 'ice tea' around the edges. There is a spectrum of lemonbursts and I'm sure that a purist will say that a lemonburst doesn't have a hint of red or faded ice tea around the edges at all.

Anybody else feel this way?

A lemonburst is a color that represents a faded Sunburst. The original bursts that faded to lemon, or unburst, vary in amounts of red or that honey color. So the variations all work. There is really no set amount of red or honey color in a lemonburst because the real ones they represent all vary. So a purist really has nothing to base there ideal on. Lemons are more of a genaric name covering a variety of fades that all look overwhelmingly yellow.

But with the Gibson USA models, they do not represent old bursts. The colors offered are there to give potential buyers a wider variety of color choice. They all have specific names and are applied with set formulas. The Honeyburst looks like some lemons but has a different formula and color scheme. They don't vary in the colors used. They only vary from guitar to guitar because they are a sprayed finish.

So a honeyburst isn't the same thing as a lemon and calling a historic a honeyburst could be taken as a degradation. But I don't think that was the case here.

Re: Show your Lemons!

It is Lemon DROP by the way. By the time it reaches Lemon, there is no bursting left. In vintage jargon, the Cherrybursts go to faded cherryburst, teaburst, honeyburst and finally Lemondrop. The Darkbursts become tobaccobursts once all the red is gone. (Vintage jargon only, because the names for Historic finishes do not always have a vintage correlation)

So what colors was Gibson making IN 1959, besides all the colors we know that are just fades?

And BTW, how does a Darkburst fade completely? Darkburst, tobaccoburst...then what?

I still need to get some more pictures (with the switch tip on) but she's finally mine. It took my ears a couple days to "get it", but now I know what the fuss is about. (Thanks once again Steve)
