Re: Stingers....?

Kind of off topic, but didn't old Byrdlands have stinger headstocks?

Yes....I've seen one too.
Which gives me a thought...maybe Mr. Gavin is refering to the old Stingers and NOT the '03 reissues......if so, Gavin, I apologize.

A lot of higher end Gibson's with light-colored necks had the Stinger. Byrdlands, L5, etc.

Nah... WB's are hype, smoke and mirrors. I am a marketing guru. LOL!

Sweet '96 Yamano R8 Martin! I really love the color and the top. Good score!I see the Gibson amp that we talked about! Nice!

I have to tell you that I have been gassing for a JP Oxblood for a couple of years now and when I saw the picture of the Stinger you posted... It started the old gas again after I thought I had it under control. This guitar you had is really sweet. If you know the buyer, send him a message for me that if he decides to sell to contact me. Maybe we can trade. I can get him anything from small children to food stamps. I want a JP Stinger like that one. The top on that one is cool...

That guitar rocks.
Only 22 made, and that top is the best I've seen, by far.
I would love to hear it. Wrap tail, no bridge. I'm sure it
has a distinctive sound.

Thanks I really like the Yamano alot...should be really killer with the new pickups, pots, NOS Vitamin Qs, lightweight tailpiece, 50s rewire im putting in as soon as I get the PUs. I really love the top/color as well ..not over the top figuring in the top like one '97 R9 I once had --probably in the top 5 of "over the top" flame tops ive ever seen--..but this one is unusual and different.,,share something in common with my old Stinger too...was never drilled for a pickguard from tha factory.

The Gibson Lancer amp is very cool...very similar to the 50's Tweed Deluxes ive owned..a bit more gain..and a bit less mid heavy. Kinda hidden gems of vintage amps..but their prices are starting to climb..mines super clean..got it off a Missisippi Riverboat Captain who had it since new and apparently hardly ever played it as it is untouched..original Gibson 6V6s and two prong cord and all.

I called "buybacks" on the Stinger when I sold it..doubt he'd comply with those terms though..lol..seems like just about every piece of gear I have has a story behind it..lol..the Stinger was no exception...I had been looking for one exactly like that, but by that time Music Machine had stopped the Stingers and the company was in transition to new ownership. I saw this one on TGP for sale....guy wanted $3700 at the time I think..I emailed him said "I"LL TAKE IT..Cash sale and come get it today!" He replied "..Its on hold for someone" ..and I would normally never do this but the guitar was IT for me at the time and figured id probably never see one again so I replied.."I want that guitar! I'll give you $3,800!!" ....kinda feel bad about that..lol..He emailed me back and said "Well this other guy is apparently on the fence a little about the guitar because it has dime sized knot in the mahogany on the side of the heel of the neck" Knowing I had to act before unkown potential buyer came to his senses, I replied " No fences here, I want it, and I'll pay you NOW with the extra $100 I offered!" He agreed..I drove 3hrs to get the guitar, and was a happy camper..even got a pigtail wrap tail for an extra $50 with it...crazy thing about it --at least to me--he sold it in favor of a Cloud 9..poor choice in my opinion..but worked for me! One thing I loved about that guitar..is you could pretty much take it anywhere and KNOW you werent going to see another one like it..lol..and people kinda looked at it like..man thats cool..theres something different about that one. My '64 Glenwood 98 has that same effect..pretty much will never see another one in person unless you go to a Glenwood convention..if there is such a thing..lol.

My next IT guitar is a MM Real Feel...Ive always like V - Shaped necks..old Dean Explorers are Killer for that. Real Feel is basically a Stinger with a V Neck ..but no black stinger on the back..lol..same deal with Music Machine otherwise though...probably even less of those than Stingers. Probably wont find one..and probably will be unaffordable if I did...but ya never know..I get pretty lucky sometimes. I've been tempted to shape my Yamano that way since theres plenty of meat to do it...but can never bring myself to do that to a collectible guitar..maybe someday I'll just buy a nice plain jane '58 with a big neck and do it and not care.

It cracks me up... that since everyone ignored your original enlightening post, that you felt it necessary to chime in yet again to offer up your profound opinion...

ANYWAYS, LPCollector, "The Diva" blows me away every time I see her. What a beautiful guitar!!!

Re: Stingers....?

OK, now I'm tired of this. I feel stupid but can somebody please enlighten me about the Stingers. Evidently there where Stingers in the 50's but what was the purpose of the black color? Is it some kind of mask for a broken neck or what is it?

Re: Stingers....?

According to the book “The Beauty of the Burst” It was
used originally to hide flaws and defects in the wood.
Music Machine, asked that Gibson use it on all the guitars
made for them, to distinguish the Music Machine guitars
from the normal run.
