58 Flame tops???? Anyone have any pic??

I know they don't make '58 flame tops anymore (except chambered models) does anyone have one they can post pics of???

How do they stack up against the current R9's?

Here's some cool ones on GBase...

Stupid question.... ready?

First, that is a beautiful guitar. Why does the tailpiece, bridge and pu covers look "old"? Is that the way they came, or are they aged/relic'ed.

Just wondering.

Thanks!

It says right in the description..."All the hardware is nicely aged/tarnished (looks better than the stuff you get on new Murphys!)"

That's awesome Dan! I really like that top its very old school looking and not "wild". It has nice vibe to it.

What are the differences from your '58 to the R9's out there???

Frets, Neck size, electronics?

I much prefer the tarnished look over brightly polished nickel. These guitars are recreations of instruments made 50 years ago and to my eyes they look best when they've got that vintage patina to them. Here are changes I've made to this guitar:

- Fatboy pickup rings (vintage-correct color)
- Homemade pickguard in correct color
- WCR Crossroads pickups with DMC covers
- Fatboy toggle switch ring
- Turned and polished the stock switch tip to remove seam
- Replaced pots with audio-taper components
- Rolled the edges of the bridge saddles
- Added stainless steel bridge posts
- Aged and tinted all plastic
- Aged and tarnished all metal parts

Yet to come:
- Historic Makeovers celluloid inlays are in the mail as we speak
- Uncle Lou's tuner tips
- Roll the fretboard edges

This is a 2007 chambered '58 that I picked it up last Spring from Wildwood. It weighs in at a very comfortable 7.6 lbs. The top is exactly what I was looking for; a nice subtle vintage-looking flame. I liked the top on this guitar better than any of the '59 reissues they had in stock, and the best thing was the price was about $1800 less. The neck has a perfect '59 profile. I've been playing the hell out of it since I bought and its become my favorite player.

Frets and electronics are identical. The neck on this guitar is actually a hair thinner than the three R9's I've owned. Really, the only decernable difference between this '58 RI and a '59 RI is the fact that the serial number begins with an "8".

Re: 58 Flame tops???? Anyone have any pic??

I just took these this morning. 98 R8. This guitar sounds and plays equally as well as my 2000 R9. Big 'ol neck.

To the eye, the guitar is more a straight honey color, but take a picture of her and all the hidden cherry becomes visable.

Funny you say that, because that's exactly the subtle type flame I was after. Actually, the '58 above was my second choice, although I can't say I have any regrets. My first choice was even a little more Page-like and even had the flame angled a bit. While I was working out a deal with my salesman, the guitar was sold to another buyer through a different salesperson.

Ah, yes. Dano's "sister of Pearly" rules my entire Darkburst thread!

Here's mine: A 2001 '58 Unburst Flametop.

I also own a 2004 '59 and both are monster guitars! The '58 screams more and the neck is slightly bigger, I love um both!
