Re: " SYBIL " Got a Bit of a Makeover !!!

Bobbo, you've spent a lot of time and money on that R8 of yours and it's a real beauty and those upgrades and relic parts looks amazing.

Do you think that you'll ever put a set of true PAF's on her? Just curious, the money you've spent on her upgrades you're getting close to the cost of having a set of original PAFs.

I think for me, I'd go with accurate electronics first. I'm a little hesitant to change the stock R8 that I have but I have a set of Luxe Bees that's begging to be installed and I'd really love to upgrade to true PAFs one day.

I guess I'm not addicted YET to making all the pieces, parts as accurate as I can but then again the day ain't over...*grin* and you're not helping me fight the feeling either!

Re: " SYBIL " Got a Bit of a Makeover !!!

Got " Sybil " A 59 pickguard bracket !! Had to relocate the hole as Gibson puts it smack dab in the middle of the binding and vintage LP's had the hole right where the wood & binding meet or even a bit lower down than that !!! I got the part from Randy's .. Guy took good care of me ! Not only did it come with the correct 59'er phillips head screw but he also included the vintage side screw !!!

Looks great bobbo! But how would one know those screws are authentic, besides from getting it from a reputable seller?

Are you going to rewire with that high lead content Tesco vintage solder ? Here it makes a night & day difference with the sound at least that what Will Boggs tells me ( he swears by the stuff)

Hey Flick.
That makes total sense about the solder, was wondering where that would be available.
Do you have a link to a reputable source?

Can someone point me to that Tesco VS? I'd rather do that than use Radio Shack electrical solder.. Makes sense to me. Good point Flash! Thanks!

Can anyone tell me what ratio the lead to tin content is?

This is actually the 4th incarnation of a guard for Sybil ... The first 2 were cut for a REAL 59 ... But Historics are a bit off of vintage spec ... So my friend made 2 more versions till it fit like a REAL 59 would !!!

Re: " SYBIL " Got a Bit of a Makeover !!!

I want to do the thumbwheel mod to my current Les Paul Standard and my R9 when I get enough money to bust it out of the guitar shop. Could I do the mod myself, i.e. just buy an extra set of thumbwheels and put them underneath the current ones?

Hopefully the guitar shop has some there or can get 'em.

Well , I think the Standard has a bushing of sorts at the bottom , So I don't think you can do it to that one !!! But the R9 just has posts that the ABR1 bridge sits on and that you can put another set of thumbwheels on ... I screw one set tight down to the body to prevent post bend and the other the ABR1 rides on !!!

Isn't this the type of bridge on your Standard ???

BOBBO, I'm a little late to the party, but I think your project is really cool. I have enjoyed reading the thread. Life is fragile and we need to do what makes us happy whenever we can. Looking forward to more updates!

A question on the BOBBO mod, does the lower thumbwheel dig into the the body?

Dave

I don't think i'd term it as dig in ... But it is definately snug up against the body and it does end up leaving an imprint of the thumbwheel hole on the body !!! ... Not sure what's next for Sybil , Maybe some fading
