Pentatonic Lesson 3 (METAL!!!)

Ahhhhg! I SMASH YOU WITH MY VIKING AXE OF DETH!!

Yes, this lesson follows on from 'Pentatonic Lesson' and 'Pentatonic Lesson 2' (applying Pentatonics) and now we'll look into some licks you can use in metal style music using what you got from the other lessons.

Lick 1 (In E)

e/-------------------------------------------------------/ X2
B/-------------------------------------------------------/
G/--12-h14-p12--12 h14-p12--12-h14-p12--12-h14-p12---/
D/--12-----------12----------12-----------12------------/
A/-------------------------------------------------------/
E/-------------------------------------------------------/

E/-------------------/-----------------------/
B/-------------------/-----------------------/
G/--14bu--------rb--/---14ph~---------------/
D/-------------------/-----------------------/
A/-------------------/-----------------------/
E/-------------------/-----------------------/

Key:

h - hammer on
p - pull off
bu - bend up
rb - release bend
ph - pinch harmonic
~ - vibrato

This is a 4 bar (high tempo) solo / lick in E. If you play this as it is you won't get the correct effect so let me explain it....

You start off with 2 bars of a 8th triplet lick - bar the 12th fret with your first finger and upstroke the D and G string; then hammer on the 14th fret on the G and pull off to the 12th. (with your middle finger) Start slow and work up to fast; you will notice when you play this fast - playing the 12th with an upstroke allows you to perform the hammer on faster and gives a different feel to the lick.

Next is a bend on the 14th fret of the G; hold it for half a beat then release.

The next bar features a pinch harmonic with some vibrato; alot of people like to use pinch harmonics to make squeal like sounds - its good to add to licks and riffs and is done by holding the pick so there is very little of it coming through your fingers and striking the string with your thumb and the pick at the same time; dampening the string creating the harmonic. You may need to strike a particular place of the string to make the hamromic ring out.

Lick 2 (in A)

P.M:----- ----------- ----------- ----- (palm mute)

e/----------------------------------------------------/
B/----------------------------------------------------/
G/-----------------------5----------------------------/
D/---------5---------------------------5--------------/
A/--7-5-7----7-5--7-5-7---7-5--7-5-7----7-5--7~----/
E/----------------------------------------------------/

All triplet 8th notes cept the last note which you hold for one bar.

Lick 3 (in A)

e/-8-7-5----------8-7-5---------8-7-5--------------------/
B/---------8-6-5---------5-6-8----------8-6-5-5-7-8-----/
G/--------------------------------------------------------/
D/--------------------------------------------------------/
A/--------------------------------------------------------/
E/--------------------------------------------------------/

e/--5------t17/18\17------/
B/------------------------/
G/------------------------/
D/------------------------/
A/------------------------/
E/------------------------/

t - tap

This is in the aeolian scale from lesson 1. The first runs and done as 8th triplets; try and keep then even, you can use hammers or pull offs it that helps but try and keep the attack of the notes even; this will sound more metal.

The last note is the 5th on the high E; play it for one bar then tap on the 17th fret and slide your tappend finger up to the 18th and back.

Well thats all for now. Thanks for looking and stay METAAAAAAAAAAAAL!!!

Re: Pentatonic Lesson 3 (METAL!!!)

Some of the tab lines came out kinda strage for some reason even though they look fine in the editor; I'm sure you know what I'm getting at anyway.
