Learning Blues Guitar

i've been playing guitar for about 3 years, but just got serious about it a year ago. i learned barre chords and open chords, but now i wanna start to get into more complex guitar. I have always loved the guitar sound of like Clapton, taking blues and mixing it with rock. My problem is i dont know where to start! Any help guys????

Re: Learning Blues Guitar

A couple of my favorite recordings for getting an ear for blues rock:
Duane Allman Anthology Vol 1
Allman Brothers Band Live at Fillmore East

Also, try not to make it too difficult. "Blues" is "feel" more than technical ability.

Leave your wife, steal your friends wife, lose you child to an accident - You will be able to play the blues.

I start with the major and minor pentatonics for rock, country and blues. Sometimes it's the scales that will give you the feel sometimes it's the timing. More double stops in rock and good right hand rhythm technique. You can also mix minor modes into your blues scales for a little more depth.

Cream era Clapton mixes rock with blues, cross roads, sunshine of your love etc. I grew up playing a lot of Clapton, but even more Hendrix. Jimi mixed blues with rock a lot I think. Your Tone needs to have a little more edge for the rocky blues. Billy Gibbons, Gary Moore and Joe Bonamassa rock the blues as well. My 2 cents...

I love the Cream era! Clapton had his best tone then i believe. like sunshine of your love, white room, strange brew, badge. its just incredible to me, and then how he evolved into more of the Rock sound !

There you go, take and play what you like. Blues rock will vary from gritty SRV Johnny Winter Texas blues rock, to Mick Taylor, Keith Richards British blues rock etc. It's all good IMHO

So, what are you really interested into? The blues or blues-influenced rock....?

Re: Learning Blues Guitar

Once you understand that "it all" pretty much comes from the blues, jazz, rock, metal, it will be easier to look and things and see how the different musical genres actually blend together vs standing apart from each other.
I am basically a blues based guitarist, and happy with 3 chords and 12 bars, but I like to play everything from Johnny Cash to Metallica

Re: Learning Blues Guitar

The blues is inside of all of us...to one degree or another.

Example:If you loose your girl or your dog or your entire life savings to a Bernie Madoff,

you then pick up the guitar and it literally connects with the pain you have on the inside.

It has little to do with actual talent in the end.
