borrowed licks

Every now and then guitar players "borrow" licks from other guitarist. List some most notables.

Original "SHOCK ME" KISS Borrowed "LIT UP" Buckcherry

here is one I just heard today which prompted me to make this thread.

Original "LA GRANGE" ZZ Top borrowed "SHAKE YOUR HIPS" Rolling Stones.

Re: borrowed licks

AH La Grange comes from one of the old Black blues men first though. I forget which, perhaps John hooker or JR Wells? A lot of old blues riffs lived again thanks to Whitey.

Let's see, The main lick from "Layla", taken and reused by Elton John in "Have Mercy On the Criminal" From the "Don't Shoot Me ..." album. Elton does it on the piano.
Heck, its probably an old blues lick too..........

Re: borrowed licks

Most all the blues licks you will ever hear are buried somewhere in Robert Johnson's recordings.... But then, he borrowed them from someone else I'm sure. He just happened to get credit because he was one of the very few Mississippi Delta blues musicians back in those days that got the opportunity to record their songs.

Actually, it was because, he went down to the crossroads, and got a deal.

Re: borrowed licks

Hell boy's every time you hit a note, your copying someones lick's. Strum an A chord you just started the progression to 90% of any Rock song.

Robert Johnson went to the crossroads to sell his soul to the Devil, what have you done with yours?

So very true. It's kinda like coffee. We all take the same ingredients into the cup, and make them into something we like. We all add our specific flavor to these licks.

Reminds me of a time when I made the comment that the open E "just sounds like rock and roll."

Am I the only one that thinks of Cream's Crossroads when I hear an open A?

Take it easy,
Fred
