I wanna get better. Resources for intermediate guitarists?
I think I've reached the point in my playing where I'm at that intermediate stage. When you can fool the average Joe into thinking your a virtuoso, but you can't fool the real musicians.
What are some good resources to help an intermediate guitarist reach that next level? |

It's not exactly rocket science. You're sitting in front of a box that connects to (literally) a world of information. You're the only one who knows what is going to make you a "better" guitarist. Pick the things you want to improve and work on them.
Oh wait, you were hoping for some magic "finger sauce" or something?

I'd say learning more theory and practicing scales and harder riffs with metronomes helps.

Re: I wanna get better. Resources for intermediate guitarists?
I expanded as a lead guitar play when I started to learn Jazz. Being a "classic rock" kinda guy, that was the shock I needed. I am still learning the theory side and it all connects.
So, the point of my post is to try to move out of your "comfort zone" music style wise. Try some other musical genre, it will open your mind and fingers

Someone who has been playing a lot by himself, by soloing over tracks and playing covers, will never be as good as someone who hasn't played as long, but plays with others quite a bit.

I spend LOTS of time on YouTube watching videos. I never have my guitar with me, but I enjoy watching anyway. I pick up alot of ideas.

Re: I wanna get better. Resources for intermediate guitarists?
If you are that type of player who has learned the basics (Powerchords, pentatonic and blues scales, bending, etc.) and if you want to open your horizont and explore more advanced and "exotic" sounds and techniques, you should check out "Creative Guitar" vol 1 and 2 by Guthrie Govan - the two volumes supplement one another - vol 1 deals with theory, while vol 2 shows you some more advanced techniques.
Another book that deals with more advanced concepts is "Heavy Metal Lead Guitar Vol. 2" by Troy Stetina. Don't let the title discourage you: Troy can teach you a lot, even if you are not into metal. The book features concepty like the phrygian mode, the spanish flamenco scale, tapping, Yngwie-style shred, etc. Vol 2 also contains 5 solos that apply the techniques you learned in the previous chapters and ends with a cool instrumental track. |

Spend some time over there learning some lessons that interest you. They have all levels from beginner to advanced, to SUPER INHUMAN ADVANCED. Here's a clip of me attempting to play an advanced lesson: Check out the forum too, it's pretty helpful - especially the theory lessons: Masterclass Guitar Forum -> Andrew's Theory Lessons Seriously, this website helped me immensely. |

Re: I wanna get better. Resources for intermediate guitarists?
I'd suggest you look for a good teacher. You'd be surprised how many pros still take lessons whenever they can.
and maybe think of expanding your horizons, study some classical, or some jazz, etc.

Re: I wanna get better. Resources for intermediate guitarists?
all good advice. watch, listen and learn as much as possible, try a new style etc. you tube is filled with lessons. try playing in new styles. by trying to learn jazz i began getting into seven note major and minor scales and modes and out of the basic blues pentatonic scales which i think is where a lot of the really great music lies. Songs like Sandman, Somewhere Over The Rainbow, Autumn Leaves and Moon River all use the major/minor scales. You can't really play them using a blues scale as you're limitid to five notes, what about all the other notes? learn the basic jazz chords and scales and then get into modes....
