Re: Peter Greens Tone

Forget about garageband and stuff like that - the old saying: it's in the fingers! Guess you know that. The other thing is: you'll need a guitar with humbuckers (P 90s can come close) where the magnet(s) on one of the pickups is/are reversed so that you are more or less (dependent on the setting of your vol. controls) out of phase.

Re: Peter Greens Tone

Peter attacked the strings ( both hands ) in a very special way. I've studied his technique closely and the tone is in the fingers; especially such a player as the vintage Peter Green.
Having a nice Lp like mine ( see below ) w/ WB Greenies would not hurt though....

Re: Peter Greens Tone

Cheers guys for the info much appreciated, I met him back in 1996 he had just started his splinter group, he was a very timid man when you actually shook his hand especially the size he was at the time, however would i be right in saying he used a strat for need your love so bad? my reason is the vid on youtube shows him with a strat

Thanks again

Does anyone have any good kinks to sites for him, ie amps, setups etc?

Re: Peter Greens Tone

The vid is a lip synching thing, I think. As for details on his life, career and also equipment and other details, there's a very good biography written about him.

Re: Peter Greens Tone

If you are interested in changing pickups, you should give Bare Knuckle a try. they produce a set of humbuckers that emulate PGs tone.

Re: Peter Greens Tone

I know it is half assed but I use my wah wah pedal backed off just slightly. I get a nasaly like tone without having to do a pickup change or mod. For a true Peter Green player this is blasphemy, but I wanted flexibility.

I don't think its half assed. Peter Green happened upon a tone not by slavishly copying someone, but with imagination and a creative attitude. Same with Jimi, to my mind the more people try and perfectly recreate the hardware etc, the less like their hero they become - because its sort of the opposite of what they (their hero) was doing. Good for you for finding your own approach.

Re: Peter Greens Tone

plus i think PG used a wah in the same way at times too. adds a bit of treble boost (or gives it that sound anyway) for those really nasally tones.

he has a really laid back approach to the guitar at all times and loves his reverb. your not going to be able to emulate him and to be honest i dont think that would be too satisfying anyway. he based his sound around the 3 kings and otis rush among others and i think if like me you really like Green's playing, listen to him and his influences and use that to develop something that you like.

aside from getting a good feel for minor blues scale licks, tonewise you should just try to keep the gain down. keep it pretty articulate so that you can actually feel when you get a good vibrato, bend etc. if necessary add more reverb. listen to green manalishi and it sounds pretty heavy but that is basically an aural illusion in that there is loads of cavernous reverb (played in a multistorey carpark with the amp at one end and mic at the other apparently)

if you have the feel right, you could do a good job of need your love so bad on a strat (or any guitar within reason).

Minimalist playing, Maximum Tone, Perfect execution and Phrasing. I have spent hours playing along and trying to Mimic his licks
PG Got his Tone from His fingers IMO, Strat, LP whatever, the Guitar itself did not matter so much, it was his Tone....
