Re: So you want to know about music eh? Then watch!
Stop making so much sense Phil. The guys are perfectly happy with masturbatory pentatonics. I however am a mechanic. I like to know how things work. Kind of like a schematic. I really appreciate these vids. It breaks it down to the elementary level. A place where a lot of people need to go back to and start over. Myself included.

Re: So you want to know about music eh? Then watch!
Good rant. Here's some fuel for it. A couple of years ago I read a piece on an IT expo somewhere, and one of the whiz-bang displays was a big screen showing footage of an orchestra. You, the user, got a special laser baton. You’re the conductor. The spiel was ‘put yourself in the music!’ and so on. The way it worked was that if you waved the baton faster, the orchestra played faster. If you waved it in wider sweeps, they played louder.
As the reviewer said: a speed control. Wow. A volume control. Wow. ‘cause that’s all conductors do, right? Control speed and volume!!!![]() ![]() The reviewer rightly pointed out that you could learn more about music with a couple of rocks. Concepts such as rhythm and dynamics. Syncopation. Etc. If you sang along while you banged the rocks you could learn a whole lot of other stuff, too. Apparently the gee-whizz orchestra on a screen thing was booked for tours of museums and schools as an ‘educational exhibit’. Well, I suppose it’s educational in the sense that it shows how fucking stupid we can be.

Thanks for this. I hope a few folks who have been having trouble getting their arms around "theory" will benefit. Just because you don't get it in less than three heartbeats, doesn't mean it's useless and you don't need it.

The saving grace is that there a few young uns out there willing to learn and take their time doing the apprenticeship and they will be the ones who will get the work ten years down the line from now. A classic case is of a young ( 18 years old ) guy I teach.. He did it the hard way.. He's been coming to me for years now and going to jam nights and we have covered a great many styles and theory. He's a lovely blues player, but can also switch at the drop of a hat to playing Chet Atkins stuff and again switch to a classical piece or latin rhythms. He started college this year and I gauranteed him he would be in demand. He came to me some months ago and said "Phil you were dead right" "The college is full of widdlers, but none of them can play anything else and most are crappy at rhythm and know hardly any chords. I am being asked to work with all the vocalists and do their sessions in the college studio with them. I am also involved with a blues band. A duo and quite a few other things". The kid deserves it .. He's a great player and I take my hat off to him putting in all that effort and not being blinkered.

Re: So you want to know about music eh? Then watch!
I have watched all through the melody, rhythm and harmony parts and this is some of the best I've seen regarding this topic. It's great for beginners, entertaining for folks who even aren't interested in music much and insightful for people who are already advanced. The way Mr. Goodall dissects the various ingredients that make up music and puts them together again to paint a complete picture is excellent for teaching beginners and I will pick up some of it.

Yeah I find it's the only real video out there that not only makes sense, but gives you the history of music at the same time and how it has been applied across the board.

This is awesome - thank you so much!! I'm always trying to explain that music is universal to people, but I think that I'll just refer them to these videos instead. thanks again!!

Re: So you want to know about music eh? Then watch!
What an ironic twist of fate..
I was talking to the singing teacher down this neck of the woods today and it turned out that they just did a performance at the Royal Albert hall with all the school choirs from the county of Somerset.. And guess who one of the presenters ? Howard Goodall..Well well...

I would also recomend watching the section on bass in the series, to get an understanding of how that also fits in . You can never know too much about this music stuff anyways.....

Thanks for bumping the thread Harmony. There is so much info in those videos, if only people took the time to watch them.
The series is the best documentary on music ever made in my opinion.

Re: So you want to know about music eh? Then watch!
Yes, thanks to whomever for the bump or I would've never seen this. I'll be forwarding this thread to lot's of folks.
I was told I once gave a singer songwriter "writers block" for about 3 months. In the act of trying to explain, what I felt was pretty remedial, a basic tonic dominant relationship and how if he wanted his material to improve he should "honor" the music by learning more about the mechanics etc. His response was "I just try to feel it man" My response: "Yeh, that's what I look for in a dentist or a surgeon." Here's the one that should've been at the top of the pile Phil. (and once again, THANK YOU for taking to time to corral all these VERY entertaining nuggets of wisdom!)

What I love about this series is that there are no boundaries ie.. It's not just a snooty programme on classical music, nor a programme soley about loud rock music. It's about music full stop and how each genre of music throughout history has inspired another. In my opinion, this should be shown in every school.

I still hope that some german TV station will be smart enough one of these days to pick this one up and air it over here.

Re: So you want to know about music eh? Then watch!
Hell, I wish they had things like this when I was a kid.. All we had was some crusty old bastard playing Shenahdoah on the piano and everyone had to sing. Well seeing it was a real rough all boys school and the lyrics in the second verse at 1:30 went..
'O' Shenandoah I love your daughter'. You can imagine what they sang. 'O' Shenandoah I f***** your daughter'. Well that's as far as we got every week before we were all marched into the hall and the whole class was caned by the headmaster..Shit that hurt.. It wasn't even me, but you couldn't say who it was for fear of getting beaten up outside. Bloody marvelous..That's what my music lessons consisted of, week after week after bloody week. Every time I hear this song I can feel that cane sting on both hands.

I can imagine the boys singing something like that, we also had those kind of lyrics to our songs at school.Ouch, I remember the cane days very well, as well as the slipper in elementary. I remember seeing mostly boys come out of the Heads office with tears in their eyes and not being able to sit for a while ![]() We had some boring songs to learn in my guitar lesson days at school. I also remember having a floppy vinyl/plastic 7" record from a magazine or book or something to help tune the guitar from ![]() I believe I still have that and my music note book in my memory box somewhere
