Nice topics

wish we had the internet 30 years ago it would have made life easier. I had (like a millions others)to grab all that stuff by ear off of LP's and cassettes.

one of my first guitar pro lessons was the first blues scale and homework to just listen to a song and play what I heard..... but it sure is easier to see it all close up.

Yes, the internet has changed everything. My eight year old son is interested in guitar. He has so many more resources available now. 30+ years ago a kid couldn't even find a good electronic tuner & most cheapie turntables, cassette players were out of pitch at least a little.

Re: New Video: Blues You Can Use: #04 Playing Over Chord Changes

Here's another with some blues licks in A.

I want to shy away from really breaking it down technically. I think that whatever you can pick up from this is what I want to impart. If you just get a couple things to use, then I've accomplished what I set out to.

I want this to remain fun and easy to listen to. Hopefully you cats can help me get better at doing just that.

Here 'tis

Yeh,but I bet players today don't develop an ear like you did. When it get's too easy and everything is laid out, there's a tendency to just regurgitate what we hear and see (parrot fashion) rather than figuring it out ourselves.
I'm all for ease---but so many of my students are dependent on tabs,or me figuring out songs for them.I try to get them to train their ear,and use tabs and videos as a supplemental thing.
Dan's a really good player, and can teach alot of stuff............but I bet he learned old school, which is why he has a good ear!

You may have a point about "developing and ear". Back in the old days, the only way to learn new licks (other than paying for formal lessons) was to try and play what you heard on a record (for those who haven't seen one, its like a CD, only its bigger, typically black, and has a groove cut on each side), or swap riffs with your buddies while jamming. The problem with old records is they run a little slower than "real time" so they were always just a shade off from standard pitch. I think some of the best "ear training" I ever got was in getting my guitar in tune with whatever record I was playing. They all seemed to be just a little different pitch from each other.
I do love all the resources on the net, though. I can now learn in a few weeks what would have taken months in the old days. It is interesting to look at the Tab for a song and see how much of it I was doing right (and how much I was doing "wrong" as well).
Even an old dog can learn a few new tricks...

Re: New Video: Blues You Can Use: #04 Playing Over Chord Changes

I really loved the last blues shuffle video and especially dug some of the chord voicings you did !! I tried to cop the licks from watching it and pausing but it was just a bit too fast for a hack like me ! Maybe before you do a tune show the chords to the camera for a second or two longer ... Some simple stuff for the guys just breaking into the blues would be way cool too !! I can't thank you enough for taking the time to do this for MLP and the YouTube viewers !

Re: New Video: Blues You Can Use: #04 Playing Over Chord Changes

hey bro

thanks for posting the vids. im learning something new from them...

i refer to tabs on the net (they help alot) and i also listen for the chords and licks.. i learnt alot of stuff by ear and i think theres lots of benefits to training your ear to listen for the 1,3,4 notes/chords etc...

its just that sometimes its a real pain to learn licks that are played really fast or when licks are mixed with major, blues, jazz notes - i have a real difficult time making out what notes are being played amidst the flurry of sound..it just sounds like a blur to me..

Re: New Video: Blues You Can Use: #04 Playing Over Chord Changes

I wanted to think back to when I started playing. What type of instruction help me the most then. It was when my friend came over and showed me stuff. We didn't spend to much time on it, because we wanted to jam...but I always learned something from it, and it was friendly and person to person.

That's a big part of what I'm trying to do. I may slow things down more in the future. I'm finding my way a little too.

dkirwan--I like them too; please keep them coming. Don't be shy about talking about what you are doing, or stopping and repeating key passages.

I liked the Santana BMW LP duo jam as well.

Thx

The videos are cool. They help you see where the teacher is going. I learned the old school way though. You hear it, and try to emulate it. Most of the time, you don't get it exact because you have your own twist working against what you hear. That the best part though. That's how you develop your own style. Taking parts of different players combining them and adding your own feel to them. Hence your developing your own style.

Dan, I just wanted to say again how much I enjoy your videos. You always get a great tone and your playing is so soulful. I often find myself with some free time in the evenings and I eventually end up on the Tube checking to see if you've put up anything new. Thanks for the inspiration!

then look at it and ssay oh thats blues scale 2 with Dorian and blues major mixed in or whatever

Granted for faster stuff and metal etc you may need a slow down machine us blues guys are lucky in that dept cus for most blues you wont need a machine

the 2nd trick is to get into the artists head. find his/her comfort zone so the next song will be easier. lets face it were all creatures of habit and tend to stay in our own zone. Once you find that zone all you need to do is find the key of the song and go on automatic pilot playing the dudes familair licks in a diff position.

I remember back in 83 the first time i ever heard SRV. i was like wtf is he doing and couldnt figure it out for months. I was totally stumped until one day I said oh wow all he's doing 90% of the time is playing the first min and maj pent scale over the changes using open strings as much as possible.

so now when i want to learn an SRV song thats the zone i look for and it makes life easier

but it takes practice and time. you just cant put on a song and expect to play it. I had to work on it just as hard as i did my playing
