Re: What is he doing with the strings?

It looks to me like he's playing a 2 note chord with hammer-ons, on the 2 low strings.. and then just sliding both fingers together. I'm not sure what you'd call that.. aside from "fcking around". hehe

I haven't listened to much Kiss, but man I gotta say that solo is very disappointing coming from one of the "legends" of rock.

Re: What is he doing with the strings?

Definitely not Ace's best work, IMHO.

It looks like he's got a couple of different things going on. It sounds like something he heard a bass player do, actually.

Fret the low E, 7th fret. With your right hand tap the A and D strings on the 12th fret...hold the notes and slide down one fret.

Another thing he does is fret the A string, 7th fret, and tap/hold the D string, 12th fret with the right hand.
Bend the A up a 1/2 step, then when lowering it, slide the right hand )12th fret, D string) down one fret.

It's making small chordal changes. Kinda jazzy, but he's playing SUPER sloppy, like he's high or drunk.

It's be easier to show you, but alas--no video gear.

No guitar gear here... A tubeless amp and a pickupless guitar.

Give it a shot though, see if you can come up with some variations on it. You'll need quite a bit of distortion.

Actually, he starts on the 5th fret of the low E string.

Here's a rough tab of the moves he makes on the fretboard...

I'll only tab the 6th,5th and 4th strings to save space, but you should be able to figure it out:

12-------I---12--------(sl)11-----I--12---------(sl)11--9-11-9
-------------------------------------------------------------
5--------I---5 (bend & release)---I--5 (bend & release)--3-5--3

The last lick is extended down to:

------8
-------
------2

I hope that helps.

Take care,
Ace

I was thinking the same thing!

Maybe Ace Frehley is the person behind those "Shred" videos!

Take care,

Never been a huge Kiss fan. Never understood the fascination people have with them. He looked like he was playing like I do when I start falling asleep late at night while practicing.
