Songs in E,A,D
Hello all...I'll be teaching these chords to some students today....I think they are the easiest chords to get started on....I've been using Bob Marley's Three Little Birds as a starter but could use some more ideas to keep it interesting...please list a fairly popular song using these chords and thanks in advance

Re: Songs in E,A,D
With E as the tonic chord:
Gloria (Van Morrison & Them) Everybody Needs Somebody With A as the tonic chord: Twist & Shout Louie Louie Wild Thing etc Those songs may not originally be in A, but you can I IV V them in that key using just A D & E.

Re: Songs in E,A,D
If they like Zeppelin, Houses of the Holy is basically those three chords with the little intro riff.
If they can go as far as Em, then All Along the Watchtower can be transposed and is a fun song to jam on. When I first started learning guitar, I loved the idea of playing a song that Jimi played and Dylan wrote, even if it was just that 3 chord progression...

Re: Songs in E,A,D
That's wise. I'm a Christian, but I really like the live version of Sympathy from Get Yer Ya Ya's Out. However, I am sure there are some parents who might object.

Re: Songs in E,A,D
Thanks again! Might be hard to pull off some of these on nylon string guitars
I usually start this lesson by watching the Jimmy Page/Rumble scene from It Might Get Loud. I think the hard part about learning is doubt. Though I dare not try to teach beginners a B7 chord, E, A and D are all there. It's a powerful scene because it demonstrates that they can learn the chords to one of the greatest guitar tracks ever. It's mind-boggling to some when I plug in to an amp and play along. For a quick moment I get to be a guitar god

Re: Songs in E,A,D
Songs with only the chords E D and A, in the original key (excluding blues in A):
Rolling Stones: The Last Time Johnny Cash: I Walk The Line Eric Clapton: Lay Down Sally All I can think of right now. Of course, countless other songs are written with just 3 chords, but if you want original keys with those 3 shapes, you'll need to allow your students to use a capo. Examples: Dire Straits: Walk of Life (capo 7) Bob Dylan: Blowin' in the Wind (capo 5) Byrds: Mr Tambourine Man (capo 5 - capo 8 for Dylan's original) Pulp: Common People (capo 3) Beatles: Love Me Do (capo 10! - maybe not worth it!) Of course, these artists didn't use a capo (apart from Dylan, but on different frets from the above) - this is just how you can play the songs in the original keys using just A D and E shapes (in case they want to try playing along with the originals). Of course they can played with no capo if you want. And once you introduce a few more easy chords (Em, Am, maybe C) choices expand enormously. |

Re: Songs in E,A,D
I think the folks on this thread are revealing their age
I'll probably have to learn a Bieber song, perhaps we can improve on it (even he's getting 'old' with the kids WTF?)

Re: Songs in E,A,D
Van Morrison, "T.B. Sheets." Two chords---D and A. Nine minutes of dripping soul.
John Lee Hooker, "It Serve You Right to Suffer" (straight, slower-than-slow E shuffle). Albert King, "Crosscut Saw" (A-D-E funky blues)

Is this with a capo? Would love to see a link with some tab on this one.

Re: Songs in E,A,D
I am assuming that his students are in the early stages of learning. This is the basic chord progression of the verses and chorus. Of course there is more than this, but this will get them through the basic part of the song. The rest really isn't that difficult.

Unfortunately, the vi chord that goes with A D and E is F#m - aargh, a barre! Teach them C and G chords, and then you get an easy 4: G-D-Em-C. Then all the myriad of Axis of Awesome songs lie before them. |

Re: Songs in E,A,D
I know it is not E A & D but ACDC TNT is a very easy song to play and it is just E to G to A.
using the open g makes it a helluva lot easier.
