how to jam over this song??

Hello guys so I am trying to solo over

But I am stuck.. I looked at the tab and the main riff is in fourths.

this is mostly all the song

Main Riff

E:-------------------------------------
B:-------------------------------------
G:------------------------------------- x4 (At The Start)
D:-------------------------------------
A:---0--3-4--0--6-7--10--6-7--0--5--3-4
D:---0--3-4--0--6-7--10--6-7--0--5--3-4

and this small not so strong harmony

PM
E:-------------------------------------
B:-------------------------------------
G:------------------------------------- x4 (The Last 3-4 is not palm muted and on the last time you miss out
D:------------------------------------- the last note)
A:-------------------------------------
D:---0--3-4--0--6-7--10--6-7--0--5--3-4

Corus

E:----------------3--------------------
B:----------------0--------------------
G:--7------5------0------5-------------
D:--7------5------0------5-------------
A:--5------3------2------3-------------
D:-------------------------------------

If I analyze the notes in the main riff. The notes do not belong to a single key so I am clueless what could I use to solo over.. and dont sound out of tune/key

Any tips how to find the scales that will work over and dont sound out?

What is a good way to know what work over given song?

-maybe moving the major scale box. (ioian mode) until you find the right key??
then aply major pentatonic etc..?

And finally when you compose do you think in keys?
-something like lets do a song in D major?
-or you just simply lay out chords you think sound good together?? then do melody

-same but starting with the melody?

any input is greatly apreciated

The solo for slither is mostly pentatonic as it is. I would just start with the notes in the regular solo then work down/up the fretboard.

Re: how to jam over this song??

Try different modes of the pentatonic over D..the song is in the Key of D, so you need to solo in the key of D.

Use more than one key. Play through the changes.

Also, as far as composition goes, sometimes they start as exercises, sometimes as inspired moments, and sometimes simple mistakes.

Re: how to jam over this song??

The main notes to use are D F G A C - the Dmin pentatonic.
Its surprising what you can achieve riff and run-wise with just these few notes over this kind of rock song.
You can then add an F# (Gb)between the F and G as a 'passing note' and also G#(Ab) between the G and A up or down.
As you get more proficient you will be able to add the other notes not mentioned so far. You'll soon realise which work and which dont.
Ultimately the choices are limitless.

Re: how to jam over this song??

Here's what you do. put on a top hat, smoke ciggarettes, and get a badass les paul. you wont have a problem at all soloing over that song.

haha.

that song is really tricky, do what i do man, find a couple notes that work and start running different scales off of those notes until you find one ya like, then use FEELING when you play it.

good luck man, post it on youtube when you find somethin good.

That's true in this case, but not every song in drop D tuning is in the key of D. EG - Zeppelin, Ten Years Gone: Drop D tuning but key of A.
