What are good pedal choices for beginners?
Well, the title pretty much sums it up.
I've been playing electric guitar for about 4 months now, just using my Epi and a Line 6 crap spider III 15 amp(I need to get rid of the amp I know). I have absolutely no clue when it comes to pedals though, what would be say the essentials for a beginner like me to get? Any input would be welcome, thnx

Re: What are good pedal choices for beginners?
what are you looking for, distortion, fuzz, overdrive, boost? above all overdrive/distortion boxes that most people buy as a first pedal i would recommend a wah acutally.....

Re: What are good pedal choices for beginners?
Well, to be more accurate, My favorites range from Randy Rhoads and Zakk Wylde to BB King. But, as I thought to take it one step at a time, I am focusing on the classic rock/hard rock guitar in order to not get confused by too much input
![]() I mostly play on distortion, I only use clean sounds for practice, besides I have my acoustic for that. So my question to put it in another way would rather be what are the most common effects used in this genre, what MUST I have to begin with? Sorry for the long explanation, but this is a thing that has troubled me for some time now.

Re: What are good pedal choices for beginners?
The amp is plain crap. It's crap even compared to my brothers microcube, and it's not even portable. I will be throwing this thing out and replacing it soon, this is another thing I need to look into asap, since I do not really what to get there as well. Money is not really a problem, all I'm looking for is a decent set to begin with, nothing specular.

Re: What are good pedal choices for beginners?
From my experience with the SpiderIII 150... they make a smokin' amp! ('til mine blew up and I bought an Orange TinyTerror)
I think you'll eventually wanna upgrade to a BIGGER amp... but if not, get a wah! Pedals are always fun... |

Re: What are good pedal choices for beginners?
Yeah I will be needing a new amp badly... My problem is I live on my own in a rather small place, and I could not use a big amp like it should be. I mostly play with my huge headphones on. So what I'm looking for is something rather small to avg, but with a better sound than the, how should I put it, much too digital sound of my Line6.
Edit: hey, 200th post

Re: What are good pedal choices for beginners?
The advice about getting a good amp is right on. Next up I would consider something like a POD so that you could try out various effects to see which ones YOU will use the most (everybody's needs are different). Then go out and get the best pedals you can for each effect type (pedals give you more flexibility and control without needing to scroll thru a bunch of presets, etc.). Now, as for a list of general effects to get, I would agree that learning to properly use a wah is a good start. I would also start with a good overdrive/distoriton sound and probably a delay (used in about every playing style). After that it is really up to you. I personally find tremolo a good effect. Then you can get into chorus/flanger, phase, vibrato, and specialty things (ping pong delays, octave dividers and pitch shifters, etc.). I hope that helps...

Re: What are good pedal choices for beginners?
I agree that you should start with a tube amp and wah.
My twin bro just bought the H&K 20th anniversary amp. That little amp rocks! We started a rock band with some friends and that little amp blends well with my Marshall. |

Re: What are good pedal choices for beginners?
It you want simple wah, the Boss AW-2 is an autowah that is easy to set up, cheap on the used market, and easier to dial in than the AW-3. I think another excellent choice is the Boss Blues Driver. Awesome pedal, and again a good value. Of course, a delay pedal is a staple. For Chorus I got the electro harmonix Cobain pedal (small clone maybe can't remember name right now) and it's very lush, excellent pedal. I got the little big muff for distortion. Verbzilla for some sweet reverb effects, including the chiming octaving repeat Edge style effect. and on and on. I will recommend the Boss pedal board BDB-60 or something, which comes w/ power supplies and hookups all neatly laid out for 6 pedals and a tuner. Portable too. Saves batteries and neatens things up. Can be found used easily.

Re: What are good pedal choices for beginners?
i would get basic distortion, reverb and maybe some delay or flange and work with the basics and find a sound you like, there are tons of effects, i suggest you go to your local music store and try some out and see what fits your style and stuff the most

Re: What are good pedal choices for beginners?
if your looking for a neat effect for a low price you should consider one of these BEHRINGER VP1 VINTAGE PHASER NIB VP-1 - eBay (item 270256708277 end time Jul-24-08 11:49:48 PDT)
Behringer has been known to make cheap not so great pedals... however this one is an exception to the rule! i got one not long ago and love it! behringer also makes a really nice compressor as well... you might want to keep those in mind if you ever decide you might want one of the two as these are an AWESOME bang for your buck!

The problem is I didn't ask or look around before I bought this amp. I got it into my head that day that I would finally buy my first guitar and amp and I did the same hour. The guitar was an Ibanez art120 and the amp, well you know. I ended up returning the guitar two weeks later and getting my Epi as soon as I saw and heard some on youtube ![]() Now I need to loose the amp heheh! It was a stupid thing to do, just going up and buying that stuff without some research first, but still I'm happy I did it, else I just might still be wondering if my acoustic is enough or not ![]() And thnx for all the info and help guys, am getting the eq next weekish, so I'll let you all know what I got in the end

Re: What are good pedal choices for beginners?
Ok after some first snooping around, focusing maiinly on smaller (bedroom) amps, since this is for now the only kind I can safely play without loosing my appartment, I kinda stuck with the Peavey royal 8 Valve King, I really like the vintage sound of it, plus its damn cheap!
What do you guys think? I added a sample I really liked. YouTube - Peavey Royal 8 Demo - Simon Peek Oh yeah, and what about this? http://www.zzounds.com/item--BOSOD20
