Favorite chord/chords

There are a crap load of unusual and to my ear unusable chords but some of you sick minded bastards still find a way to put them to good use.

So, aside from the basic "go to" or "cowboy" chords, which ones are your favorites and how do you use them?

Good to get funky with - works well as the I chord in a blues progression.

It's an F6/9 chord, it's got the root, 3rd, 6th and 9th. It's purrrty

Could also be an A7sus4/F at a push (root, 4th and 7th notes of A, over F bass note)

It could ALSO be a Gsus2 triad (G, A, D) over F.

Man, I knew music school would come in handy at some point...

Here's one of my faves

E A D G B E
x 0 2 4 2 4

It's an Amaj9 chord. Don't ask me what else it is

I'm a beginner so I may get a few laughs here but I just started learning about suspended and add chords and I really like the way they sound using the "D" and "C" chord.

Hendrix chord huh? Never heard the term but it's got my interest. I don't know how to play any Hendrix songs. Is it better tuned to pitch or flat?

It's the "Purple Haze" chord. Followed by a G and A. I like that one as well...jazzy and bluesy.

Eddie Van Halen ends most of their E key songs with it as well.

Re: Favorite chord/chords

A lot of people call that the Hendrix chord, it's instantly recognizable and easy as hell to play. Besides, would you rather call it an E7#9 chord or a Hendrix chord?

Hendrix tunes sound cool with any tuning, but tuning down to Eb is a lot of fun too, it can make stale old progressions and riffs sound new again!

BigB don't worry, we were all beginners once. If anyone laughs at you, don't worry, they're not half as good as they think they are.

Sus chords are awesome; one of my favorites is the 2nd chord (written like A2). Play an A chord, then take your finger off of the B string. It has a haunting sound; I use it a lot.

Me too! Haunting is the right word, BB. I also use the Hendrix chord a lot.

For acoustic: maj7 chords (Cmaj7, Amaj7, Dmaj7,etc.)

electric: E5, A5, etc. two finger power chords

I like to put vibrato on the "5" chords. Adds a nice Tony Iommi flavor. Not whammy bar vibrato, but finger vibrato. Just bend both strings at the same time. Takes some getting used to. I use my index and pinky for leverage.

It doesn't matter if you tune flat or not, as long as you use standard tuning (EADGBe)*.

||||||
||0|||
|X|0|| <----5th string (A)= root note (X)
||||0|
||||||

If you place the 'X' on the seventh fret in normal (not flat) tuning it is an E (7+9). Whereever you use it, the fifth string tells you what it is 'X'(7+9).

when you say A chord, is that maj or minor or something? I'm new at this.

Re: Favorite chord/chords

i like these three chords in this order but i have no idea what they are called:

---1-------3-------5----
---1-------3-------5----
---2-------4-------5----
---3-------5-------7----
---3-------3-------7----
---1-------3-------5----

i play those chords behind this (must be played super slow and dramatic):

All notes are quarter notes except the ones a with "H" above which are half notes

.......................................H.......... .............................................H
E--------------------------------------------------------------------------
B--------0-1-------------------------------------0------------------1------------
G------2-----2---2--------0------------------2----2----2-------4------4---4---
D----2---------2--------3-----3----3-------5---------5------2-----------2-----
A--0------------------3----------3-------5----------------0--------------------
E-------------------1------------------3----------------------------------------

In that case he meant major. I think it's usually major unless indicated otherwise.

Re: Favorite chord/chords

There's a great site called http://www.xs4all.nl/~hippy/chords/ ; it's a fantastic resource when I'm learning new music.

This site is a little advanced, with lots of variations:

I like it tool. I discovered the shape when I turned on "The Lemon Song" (Led Zeppelin).

I also like the 7th barre chords.

No actually I agree. My favorite way to play a C and an F is as an add or suspended chord. For a C I play the standard "cowboy" form, but lift my second finger up to add in a D. I also add the G on the E string at the same time. To make an F then I just shift my third finger down a string to play an F. I love the way these open chords ring out. Also, by favorite D (especially when playing in the key of G) is a D chord with an add 4 (a G). I play it by sliding a standard C form up two frets. I like the sound and I especially like it played against a standard chord from. It really fattens things up.

Other chords I like depend on the situation. I do like this cool inversion of a 9th chord that is played without the root on the bottom. It is actually the same chord form as a half diminished--i.e. if I am playing in A, I play the chord form for a Db half diminished with the lower note being Db. In blues it adds in a nice almost hammond organ like sound.

Re: Favorite chord/chords

I don't know why, but I love this D minor11 chord and then I slide it into a barred c major. Then If i'm feeling weird, I'll put an A minor and a B flat 6 add #11. I also like the suspended chords, and the add 9's.
