I've been renting a used Marshall 1936 Lead cab (sticker price $470) for almost 2 months, I like the sound overall, but I'm not particular in love with the G12T75 speakers in it. I'm not exactly sure what I want for speakers, some more vintage though

should I:
- try to find a cab that already has speakers I like
- buy the cab and replace the speakers (and sell them to recoup some $$)
- buy something cheaper, like a Crate or Bugera, and replace the speakers
- order an empty cab and whichever speakers I want
- something else (?)

any thoughts or opinions would be appreciated

Those 1936 cabs are pretty good. There is a guy selling a used one in North Van on craigslist. Marshall amp $300 with the same speakers. He says he paid $800 which is crap. Maybe you could get him down below $300 and load it your way and sell the existing speakers.

yeah, if he paid 800 he got hosed The more I play the cab/speakers the more I like them. But I can get an Avatar cab, with my choice of speakers for around $390 (+ shipping I suppose) that seems like a good deal, plus I get can it green with the wheat grill to match the C5.

On the other hand, thats a chunk of change, I'd almost rather pay a portion as a down payment on this cab and add it to my account at L&M. But that would end up costing more in the long run (especially if I do end up swapping speakers)

$390 for an Avatar to your liking is the way to go then. Just put a Marshall logo on it.

I'd probably leave it blank though, I think its gaudy the way companys push their name/logos so much, you pay top dolloar and then you give them free advertising The only reason I havent taken the name off my Marshall, is because its a Marshall

So are you using this as an extension to the Class 5 or with the TT? Or both? I'll bet it sounds pretty good with the TT.

Class 5, I don't have the Terror anymore, I was renting it, but it was either that or the C5, and what I really wanted was Marshall tone. I find myself missing the TT though, no doubt I will get one before too long, or maybe a DT. I've never played the Class 5 with a band, I'm not confident it would be powerful enough, I know there Terror is though, I played with Tim and his friend with it, and Tim kept asking me to turn it down

I originally got the cab to alleviate the rattling, and then a got an attenuator which needed a cab to hook up to the amp. I ended up insulating the amp cab to cut down the rattling (though its been acting up again) and I rigged a way to run the attenuator through the internal speaker, but, despite having a really nice sound, isn't as nice as a 12" (or 2 12"s) So I don't need the cab anymore, but I do like having it, if I had the money I would buy it without question. I have some Skatterbrane pickups and an Epiphone V that I'm planning to sell, and I'll probably put that $$ towards new gear.

I have a Hot Rod Deville that I never use because its too loud, I would sell that, but I would take such a loss against what I paid, I can't bring myself to do it on principal. I took the amp guts out and use the speakers with my Champ

if possible, try a cab with 25 waters, then 30, 50, 75 and 100 watters

obviously, what you will hear is five different "tones" out of one amp

if you have the option, try different speaker brands (that would be optimal): Celestion, Fane, Jensen, etc.

once you have nailed the desirable fit between the speaker and amp, you are half-way home

next is the cabinet...
