How does this happen ?
And how long in the sun will darken the inlays ?
I have a 07 studio in classic white .

Re: Black inlays

Black inlays? like black black ? Unless you have black inlays put in, this isn't going to happen naturally. Haven't you seen some of the old burst's on here that are 50 years old? There inlays have aged to a little darker, but not BLACK. If your waiting on a 07 studio inlays to age to black, your going to be waiting a long time

Re: Black inlays

If you put a new LP out in the sun, it WILL turn the inlays black.

I don't know exactly why, but a member reported this about 3 weeks ago, (the dude who's guitar smelled like smoke). I've also heard this from the dudes at RS Guitarworks.

If you put your guitar in the sun or expose to UV to fade it, be sure and cover the headstock and fretboard.

Re: Black inlays

current inlays are made of acrylic plastic.Vintage inlays are celluloid.

sunlight is not good for the acrylic ones and will leech the colour and turn them grayish.not very attractive IMO.

Re: Black inlays

If you're doing a gig outdorrs it should be ok.

DUring breaks I'd throw a towel over my guitar though, just to keep the sun off.

The member who's inlays turned black left his out for about 12 continous hours or so, I believe.

Re: Black inlays

Oh, sure--I've done several outdoor gigs with my R9, with no ill effects. I had it in direct sunlight for the breaks as well.

Have a great gig!

If you're the owner of a newer Classic with the greenish/yellowish inlays ... you'll be happy perhaps afterwards ... greyish is better than this piss yellow ...

i like the color of my inlays on my 07 classic. it goes good with the wine red and creme binding. it makes it look a bit warmer

Re: Black inlays

I'm the dude who left his smokey les paul on the deck. My inlays did turn a dark grey to black. I spoke with Roman about having them replaced. It is a heartbreaking experience to go through. I left it on my deck while I was at work, about nine hours. Beware, and learn from my mistake.

based on personal experience...you are better off with the greenish/yellow inlays.
If it bothers you too much then buy a set of celluloid inlays and replace them.

Re: Black inlays

That look will be a "vintage" Classic in about 25 years time and some idiot will be buying 'grey' inlays to put in his new 2033 Les Paul Classic to make it look retro. Lol

I also happen to think it looks sweet.

Re: Black inlays

oh my god guys. I was all set to switch them out now you are all telling me they look cool.....I don't know what to do.

Tell you this......If you'd like this service performed on your les paul to get that "Dark Inlay Look" Just send me your les and I "Darken" them, using my carefully perfected and secret method. I'll return your guitar with a COA signed by me. Remember this is a "by hand method" and is time consuming so it will likely be very expensive. But in the end....you will have an original "Olson Darkened Inlay Les Paul"

Yea, I like that blacked inlay too.

Besides the inlay get darkened, any noticeable changes on the body color?
