Best Straplocks for Les Paul

What does everyone think?

What looks best?
What are the most practical/do the job best?

I've never had strap locks. I know, I know its a sin More so seeing as I've played almost all the gigs I've ever done with my LP. Although I should say my guitar has never fallen from the strap except for one time in my house when I was holding the guitar up at a dodgy angle. Anyway (after reading countless threads here) it does seem that there is no good reason not to have them.

Will they just screw in easily though? I have a Les Paul Standard (from 2003). I don't fancy drilling new holes in my pride and joy if the new strap button is too big. And on the other hand if it's too small - I've seen this method of filling the existing hole with match sticks. I'm sorry but I just don't believe in that!

I like Schaller but Dunlop are nice also!
You shouldn't have to drill new holes!

Re: Best Straplocks for Les Paul

Currently I never put my guitar in it's case with the strap attached. The bass player in a band I used to be in had these really good looking strap locks and he just clipped his strap to his buttons each time we played. There was no need for unscrewing or having to arrange components with the strap and the button or any of that. Wish I knew what they were...

They were most likely Dunlop or Shaller straplocks

I use the Dunlop ones on my LP because they just feel so much sturdier than the Schaller ones that can pull through the strap...

They may be practical but I don't think they look very attractive...

Are these the Dunlop ones people are reffering to?

+1

It doesn't look attractive at all, but what I like best is, I can still leave them intact with the strap when storing my guitar in the case.

Thanks for telling me that because that's the opposite of what I want so I can rule them out

Will I?? From what I found when I searched this forum many people had problems with their existing holes being too big or too small. And that you don't appear to be able to just clip your starp on and off (as I've seen with other locks) without faffing about with washers etc. And some of those JD ones do look nicer...

These are good cause you don't have to change your strap buttons, the downside would be that they don't connect to the strap or guitar so you have to keep track of them, sorta like picks!

Never had a problem with them pulling through a strap if they are mounted correctly with the washers, that should never happen!

As a strap leather loses it's ridigity the whole assembly can pass through SOME straps. I'm sure I have seen the same issue reported on this forum.

I got round it by drilling a new hole at the same OD of the assy or by using Levy's straps.

Another advantage of Dunlops is the strap button is similar yo a standard button and can be used without the straplocks.

Re: Best Straplocks for Les Paul

The hole would have to be 3/4 of an inch to pull thru. If they are installed correctly and tightened down and checked occasionally, they should be fine.
Both Dunlop and Schaller are great products, can't go wrong with either!

This will also act as an Emergency-Pick, if you had ever lost your final pick while gigging.

That's what I got, Dunlop.

I had to do the toothpick/glue trick to accommodate the smaller diameter screw, but now it's solid and strong.

Lot's of people loyal to the Schallers also. Personal preference.

I'm actually swaying towards these now after what someone in the other thread (strap lock install) said about cracking the finish And also part of it is probably due to the fact that I don't really like changing anything about my LP unless I have to. All i've ever changed are the jackplate (cos the original plastic one broke) and my machine heads (something I now regret).

They're still ugly things tho!

I use the Schallers on all my guitars. There's no "faffing about" once the strap locks are on your strap and guitar. You just unhook the strap from the guitar - it clips into place. The only faffing is when you first put the strap locks on the guitar and the strap.

I've never had a problem with the Schallers, and I personally like the look. Nothing against Dunlops - again personal preference.

Schallers are excellent - I was in a similar situation to you - i did a lot of reading about this and found good reasons to go for either dunlop or schaller - the main thing that swung it for me is that Slash uses Schaller - If there good enough for him, there gonna be more than fine for me

When using Schallers, do you keep the original strap button or has to replace with the Schallers Strap Buttons?

I used to have dunlops on my les paul until it dropped and broke the headstock...the dunlop mechanism failed on me @#$%$!!!! The schallers are double secure because your guitar really hangs in a cup.

Thats exactly what I've worried about with the Dunlops (and why I use Schallers) - there IS NO SECONDARY RETENTION! If the lock mechanism were to fail on a Schaller, you're still fine. All you have to do is a quick check to ensure that the nuts are tightened down and you're safe.

As for the Dunlop plastic clips, I tried them for a minute, and on several of them (I'd gotten a few sets), the center ring popped out of the triangle base plate, rendering them absolutely useless.

Schallers are the only way to go in my mind.
