Dumb Question : Custom / Custom Shop

Perhaps this is a dumb question, but I'll ask anyway:

Is there a difference between a "Les Paul Custom" and a "Custom Shop Les Paul Custom" or are both one and the same?

Not a stupid question at all mate, it is a rather confusing scenario.

A Les Paul Custom as a rule is not made in the Custom shop, it is part of the standard line. - it is just a 'custom' because of the 'custom' options it has over the 'Standard' (ebony board, double binding, block inlays, gold harware etc).

Of course you can get, as you mentioned, a 'Custom Shop' Les Paul custom which IS made in the Custom Shop and therefore built to more exacting historic specification.

Ah ok, thanks for taking the time to explain it.

I don't see the Customs on Gibson's USA site at this time, only the gibsoncustom.com portion of the site..

les paul customs are now all made in the custom shop, they used to be part of the usa line before.
