Classic vs. Standard vintage value, fret size, and pickups
As I posted in another thread, I'm considering selling my '73 Les Paul Recording and replacing it with a more recent Les Paul Classic. Except now I'm considering a Standard, but I'm not sure. Thing is, there are so many different damn kinds of Les Pauls in the stores that I can't keep them straight, and online information is rarely as in-depth as I would like it to be.
So here's the skinny. What I'm looking for is a used Les Paul with: single-ply binding; either sunburst, wine red, or gold top finish; NO flame or quilted maple; small frets; and covered pickups, for around $1200 to $1600. Can anyone tell me what model best fits those criteria, and which model year would be best to seek it at that price? |

You sure you want to sell an original Recording? Cool guitars man... I dunno.
You might be able to get an used R0 or R8 *if you like the fatter neck* for $1700... I've seen em come and go. A good Standard from 2000-2004 might be what you're looking for. They had a good thin neck and decent frets on em. Tops vary, but plain tops are out there. |

Re: Classic vs. Standard vintage value, fret size, and pickups
R stands for Reissue. R0 would be a 1960 Reissue, which can be had as plaintops with thin necks. The G0 is a Guitar Center exclusive 1960 Reissue that has a sweet plain top.
R8 would be a 1958 Reissue with plaintop and fat neck. So if you see R4, R7, R8, R9 and R0 those are 54, 57, 58, and 60 Les Paul Reissues. Solid bodies with no weight relief or chambering and built pretty close to original specs of the Les Paul models from the 'glory days'.

No they would not be part of the serial number. But they should be identified as to what year re-issue that they are.

you might be able to get into a used G0 (as Loki suggested), they are a great price new compared to the 'R' models.
