Narrow or wide bridge?

From a previouse post, I am going to fit a new Gotoh bridge. They do a modern abr ish equivelant which is narrow, or a Nashville which is wider and gives a larger range for intonation adjustment. Same stud and saddle spacings on both. What would you go for? Any disadvantages of wide bridge, will strings touch back so have to set tailpiece higher?

I would go wide as I like for adjustment flexibility and this might prevent you from having to flip the saddles around to get the correct intonation adjustment. It will also give you the flexibility to intonate a variety of string gauges.

ABR all the way. You'll have to topwrap with the Nashville if you go low with the Tailpiece. Plus the Nashville is ugly.

Re: Narrow or wide bridge?

The Nashville is not that much uglier, but it IS wider and will get in the way of dropping the tailpiece down. The ABR is just as fine a design, smaller in width and won't get in the way of dropping the tailpiece down to the deck. Why Gibson went Nashville is beyond me. ABR is more than enough to intonate, as long as your neck/frets are in the right place. Plus, it's a simpler design and transfers the strings vibrations more directly deep into the wood via thin posts screwed into the top. Classic. As far as I know these bridge designs are NOT interchangeable.

You can get m4 inserts to go in body to replace my usa, and m4 thumbwheel to fit the Gotoh ABR.(so I have been led to believe) So nowhere near authentic abr, but in the same size range. Thanks, I think I will go this route as raising tailpiece so the string didn't touch the back of bridge was a concern I had of the wider 'nashville'
