Slash Standard Les Paul (Quality Issue)
So I picked up one of these on Sat dealer told me the COA DO NOT COME with the Slash Standard. There are a couple of Ebay items with COA's WTF? The other thing that pisses me off is the poor workmanship on the guitar there are file marks on the frets, the rosewood is blown out along some of the edges and the there is something wrong with the finish (a rough spot behind the bridge) like it wasn't polished? I have tried several attempts to buff out this spot but I am not able to do it. The guitar feels good and sounds good but I am on the fence and may return the guitar for the lack of Quality.

Re: Slash Standard Les Paul (Quality Issue)
There is another thread that deals with the COA issue. I read that they were all sent out late but you should be able to get it from your dealer soon if not now.
As for the quality, when you drop a couple G's on a guitar you should take a little longer to inspect it. I'm sure by now you've thought of that. It is easy to get so wrapped up in the purchase excitement that the little details can get overlooked. If the flaws are too great to deal with, return it. The last feeling you want to associate with your new "limb" is regret. Oh, and don't forget the pics.

Re: Slash Standard Les Paul (Quality Issue)
Yep Yep.. could not agree more with the lack of quality in these guitars. I'm on my second one myself.
First one had the same fretboard issues, was not setup for chit (bridge and tailpiece was not even locked down), COA not there, and the kicker was that the nut was cut wrong and the high e string rolled OFF the fretboard while playing it. Top on it was great, tone was great but playability was out the window with the nut wrong. I took it to a luthier who said could be fixed np, but I'm not spending money fixing a brand new freaking guitar. Sam Ash took it back and gave me another one no problem. Funny how all the hype about them being sold out is BS. The quality control on this one is a lot better, no issues so far. I would run that thing back to GC as soon as you could. Very disappointed in Gibson on this one. Luckily I like the tone and the top on the one I did get or I would have been shopping for an 06 vintage burst standard to make my own.

Re: Slash Standard Les Paul (Quality Issue)
I had some issues with an Antique Classic H-90 I just bought but none as bad as all that. I would have been peeved royally if I had experienced the same problems, even though I only paid $1800 for my new one.
Hey, MXRACER, where do you race? I am in District 18. |

I believe it's district 29, but moto is REAL weak here. I built my own track just so I could ride when I wanted. Came up from FL a couple years ago and it was a real let down for riding.

Re: Slash Standard Les Paul (Quality Issue)
This is the email from the dealer in Canada that I bought the guitar from
Unfortunately, the American "Slash" model does not come with a certificate. Please see the correspondence below which is from Yorkville Sound, the Canadian distributor for Gibson... Depends on which guitar. The Epiphone came with it and the Custom Shop ones are here. There aren't ones for the USA Electric.......Doug At 12:52 PM 4/5/2008, - wrote: Hi guys, I've probably just missed this in the pile of Slash related e-mails but... where do we get the certificates for these guitars? Re: Slash Standard Les Paul (Quality Issue)
If your not happy return it, why have regrets?
My dealer said i'll have my COA within the following week. Mistakes were made but they do come with hem and Gibson are supplying them. |

Re: Slash Standard Les Paul (Quality Issue)
could it be that the COA's were knocked up AFTER the guitars went on sale, due to the number of complaints, and the comparison/complaint that the cheaper epihone model was coming with one?
That would also explain why they are a piece of card with no serial numbers or signatures on them -> because the guitars had left the factory? I have two emails from gibson about this. The first says "the USA Standard DOES NOT come with a COA" The next day they emailed me apologising, and then saying it does! That they will be shipped to dealers in due course |

Re: Slash Standard Les Paul (Quality Issue)
If the quality is intolerable I'd return it. Those details would bug me until they were fixed. This is completely unacceptable for a brand new Les Paul. You really have to cherry pick through the inventory to find a good one. Long & McQuade is the retailer of all things Gibson here in Canada. They also own Yorkville Sound the official distributor for Gibson here in Canada. I'd phone Yorkville In Toronto at their head office and get some action from them. There is no reason that they can't find a good one in their stock. After all they are warrantied and Long & McQuade have a no lemon policy. I've dealt with them many times to my satisfaction. Good luck, I hope you get the one that makes you happy.

Re: Slash Standard Les Paul (Quality Issue)
2 out of 8 were sent back immediately here. Complete garbage. I imagine at least 2 more of those will get returned because of similar issues.
If you got it at L&M they'll return it for you, and find you a good one. |

man, that sucks after putting down close to 3 grand and have all these issues. Corporate Gibson is probably in a tailspin right now.

Re: Slash Standard Les Paul (Quality Issue)
So I took the guitar back tonight to Long & Mcquade what a F&*%$#@ experience that was. I did not deal with the sales person I got it from as he was not in and I wanted to bring it back ASAP! The 2 bit manager decides that he wants to charge a restocking fee as I financed the guitar thru L&M. I told him that is a Gibson Quality issue that needs to be delt with and they can charge Gibson for the restocking fee for the S#@t quailty they sent out. The restocking charge was around $225 anyway he finally agreeded to give my full refund I will NEVER deal with the Long & McQuade in Cambridge, Ontario Canada EVER AGAIN! I also looked at the other Slash guitars and still believe the one I had was the worst quality and nicest top.

Re: Slash Standard Les Paul (Quality Issue)
I have always hated Gibson for this exact reason, I had a Lucille and a Paul that had similar issues...
Gibson's QC sucks big ones! I bought the Warren Haynes and was really leary about it, when it showed up I was pleased that the guitar was perfect. I have had several others that would make better BBQ wood than guitars, hell the majority of them would. By any other maker the guitar would not leave the shop or would be classified as a second at the very least. |

Re: Slash Standard Les Paul (Quality Issue)
I felt inclined to add this; I lived in Austin back in the late 90's I bought an SRV Strat brand new...this guitar sounded amazing and played great, but there was just one little thing that bugged the hell outta me, when I strummed in open chords and the G string was not fretted it would give off this gawd awful harmonic type sound. The guitar went back and forth to the shop and nobody could figure it out, Tom the guitar tech finally called Fender and got on the horn with a master luthier there and it still could not get fixed...finally Tom called Jimmie Vaughan and got him involved in it...I finally gave up after about 4 months and got a different guitar.
Long story short, all makers are going to have issues, what seperates them is their willingness to rectify the issue. Lets see if Gibson owns up to the appearant Slash issue and fixes the problems for the people that already bought. |

Re: Slash Standard Les Paul (Quality Issue)
I had to return two off the shelf standards because of the shitty file marks on the fingerboard. I've seen a lot less issues on Historics, but with Gibson I always recommend the 'try before you buy' method.

Re: Slash Standard Les Paul (Quality Issue)
If you think Gibson's shortcomings are bad enough, you havent checked out Ibanez. As said, every manufacturer will have some that will slip through the cracks, but in the case of Ibanez, it was a deliberate act of the company to defraud consumers.

Re: Slash Standard Les Paul (Quality Issue)
For anyone who has owned an Ibanez equipped with locking tremolo and basswood body made in 2005 onwards, did you know that you have to have a tremolo mod done inorder to prevent gouging out the base of your tremolo system from doing dive bombs or pull ups? To build guitars like that and then sell 'em for $10000000 is just crazy, unfair, unprofessional, and utterly disgusting!

Re: Slash Standard Les Paul (Quality Issue)
I looked at one today and it had the same defects as my cherry sunburst standard (I returned it). The finish where the neck meets the maple cap was horrible. An ugly ripple along the edge on both sides of the neck. I'm also noticing what appears to be some kind of flaw in the clear coating. There are ripples in finish on the backs of the guitars. You can feel the bumps as you run your hand across the back. The finish should be "glass like".
