How much do you think new LP standards should cost?
What they do cost is $2699. Personally I think that's absolutely ridiculous. I don't give a hoot about what Gibson says about the finish process. I've been through the tour of the Nashville plant and they're using power sprayers and power buffers to finish the guitars. I really think they should cost about $1300. That seems a fair price. Hey Gibson guys, listening?

A little low...(for Gibson Anyways)
But at that price, I'd buy 3!

Re: How much do you think new LP standards should cost?
New, $2,000 - $2,200. $1,300 for a new Standard is not realistic. I'd like to pay $8,000 for a new BMW M3 but that's not going to happen.
I thought they didn't do tours in Nashville?

Actually it would be up to us if morons wouldn't run up their credit cards buying them at the inflated price. Gibson has a class action suit going against them for price fixing as we speak.

Re: How much do you think new LP standards should cost?
That would be nice but it's not the case. If it was they'd be cheaper. As is, they're being sued for price fixing.

Re: How much do you think new LP standards should cost?
I paid £1799 for my standard and although it's not cheap, its far from top end for a Gibson. The finish is superb and it plays like butter. The new locking Grovers are sweet and the set up from the factory was also spot on, why don't you go buy a studio ?

Re: How much do you think new LP standards should cost?
I thought the prices were very reasonable when it used to be
£1400 for a standard £1800 for an R7 £2200ish for a R8 This was when the pound absolutely raped the dollar though. Its evened out a lot more now. I too think the current prices for standards and above are ridiculous. |

Re: How much do you think new LP standards should cost?
You're not forced to buy a Gibson either, there are plenty of alternatives out there. I love my Tokai LS100Q, amazing quality for £750.
I say if you want the "Name" that badly, you gotta pay the pricetag!

Re: How much do you think new LP standards should cost?
I don't find the question ridiculous at all. they should be around EUR 1,500.00 in Europe (either we're talking Standards / Trads / Classics).
Studios should not be more than EUR 1,000 (this is what I paid for mine). The Fireburst Studio however was selling for EUR 1,400.00 at my dealer! Customs / Supremes should not be more than EUR 2,200 - EUR 2,500. They sell for EUR 3,300! Yes. I find current Gibson pricing anbolutely ridiculous. Makes me wish we had a more developed second-hand market in Europe... |

Re: How much do you think new LP standards should cost?
I think that close to £2000 for the 'standard' model does seem a little steep- though part of that is exchange rate, duty, extra links in the supply chain and whatnot.
I'd rather see the standard at around £13-1400. That'd make the traditional around £100 less. But I'll put my hands up and say that I would buy one at the current going rate(£1640 for a sunburst Trad) if the cash was in my account and nothing untoward came up (unplanned motorbike servicing costs always seem to arrive when I have some disposable cash...!!!).

Re: How much do you think new LP standards should cost?
Anyone who pays 2699 for a new standard deserves to pay too much because they didn't shop around.

also keep in mind that $300 in 1959 is equal to about $2200 today, so the standard is only slightly overpriced as compared to 1959. but as others have noted, if you pay sticker you're a fool.

Re: How much do you think new LP standards should cost?
The ones i tried sound like a really bad ES-335 in disguise and the boards so ugly light in colour, so i would say certainly not worth the price. I would get a nice used R7 (Darkback of course
) if i had that kind of money right now..."..I want my backplate and i want it NOW!.."

Re: How much do you think new LP standards should cost?
I certainly believe that Gibson deserves to earn a bit of profit from each guitar. And since it costs money to ship guitars to stores who have overhead to cover and want to make a bit of retail profit, well, it's hard to know what a "fair" price is without knowing all the costs involved.
So here's the deal: you give me a breakdown of all the costs, including manufacturing, distribution, and advertising, and I will calculate what I think is a fair out-the-door retail price. Apart from that, I will say that a Gibson LP Standard is not worth more than $1500 to me, regardless of what it costs to get it in my hands. That's why I will probably never buy a new Gibson LP again in my lifetime.

If this discussion has any hope of doing anyone any good at all, I'd really like to see it moved over the the gasoline-and-propane-lovers' forum.

Re: How much do you think new LP standards should cost?
no, they aren't listening to you. They don't care how much you have to spend on a guitar, they care what the market will pay for it.
go buy a used one, like the rest of us do that can't afford to buy a new one.

Re: How much do you think new LP standards should cost?
Personally I think Ferrari's should be no more than $30k and 4500Sq Ft houses should be no more than $150k. Although what I think is irrelevant.
As mentioned, the market sets the price. If people stop buying, the prices would drop. I think this is why you see Carvin selling for close to the price you mentioned. Gibson & PRS has a lot of overhead not to mention the markup from the dealers. Carvin does everything in house and does nor have near the markup. But if these companies went that route, I think they would suffer greatly. |

theres a reason why i bought a studio, you close your eyes and listen and you dont hear that $1500 price difference.

The government should set the price.
![]() I think they should be 20% less than they are at any given moment. |
