Gibson LP Deluxe Second??????

I was at a local music store today in east Memphis and they has a beauty of a Deluxe Les Paul with the mini humbuckers, when I looked at the serial number a bell went off, there was second stamped under the serial # and it loocked like there were 3 pieces to the neck??????
I always thought that Gibson didn't sell seconds, anyone know what's up?

Possibly an oldie sold in house to a worker etc at a reduced rate that has worked it's way into the 2nd hand market?

in the old days, seconds were pretty common.
