So today I decided to bring my Les Paul over to my school to play during my off hour (tis a block day, so it's really about two hours). While I was there I got criticism for owning a Gibson Les Paul. One of these people came by and made a snide remark about how when he was my age he didn't even own a guitar, and I understand that, but I saved up for a VERY long time to get my Studio and I told him that. Then he went on a rant about how with gibson you only pay for the name and told me i should've bought from epiphone or another brand that makes knock offs. I explained to him that I wanted a high quality les paul and that he should check out some of the epiphone ones that have crooked and off center knobs and a variety of finish defects (i'm not quite sure if this is true to all epiphone guitars, but it is for a vast majority of the ones I've seen and played with, and then he said, well that's why I don't deal with gibson or epiphone guitars. I was about to make a comment about how he had recommended that I should have bought from epiphone, but i decided to leave it at that.
Anyways.. I was left feeling quite ignorant about the situation because I didn't know much about Les Pauls from other brands and such, and so I was wondering if someone would enlighten me and give me some facts about what's better about gibson and what's not, so next time I don't sit there and try to hold up an argument without very much knowledge on what I'm arguing about. Please and thanks?

Yeah, sounds like a jealous dickwad trying to make himself feel better by tearing you down. Hell with him, rip on your Les Paul with pride!

Re: Guitarists, who don't own a Gibson instrument
So many thoughts come to mind Omally. Things I'd want to say to that guy who criticized you, like, "If I want your opinion, I'll give it to you." Or something like "I'm surprised you're able to see my Gibson, seeing as your head is shoved so far up your..." well, you get the idea.
I just posted in another thread, your first gibson, discribe the feeling!. Obviously that critic will never experience that feeling. It's his loss. Just smile to yourself and be glad you have. ![]() And while you're at it, post a pic of your Gibby so we can all tell you how great it is! |

Tell him to visit here, and we'll set him strait!
People who make stupid-ass, uneducated comments like that are usually the ones who can't afford "high-end/high quality" guitars, or ANY brand-name stuff for that matter. He's just jealous, so don't sweat it! |

Re: Guitarists, who don't own a Gibson instrument
Yea, some people just don't really get it. Unfortunately, you do pay for the name little bit. a lot of the price is the quality though. look at some of the videos on youtube of how a Gibson guitar is made. It's amazing how much work is done by hand. the installation of the electronics, putting the frets in, the finish, carving the neck, sanding the neck, sanding the body, is all done by hand. This means every guitar is gonna be unique, even if they are the same model. and that, is just the tip of the iceberg my friend.

Re: Guitarists, who don't own a Gibson instrument
It is tough these days to be too evangelical about a guitar brand, even one as iconic as Gibson and the Les Paul. Gibson's prices are hard to justify, their quality control is variable, and the LP design/style is one you either love or you don't.
You are probably better off not even trying to defend your choice of guitar. For one thing, it isn't something that needs defending. You like it and that's all that matters. The best way, I think, to defuse that situation in the future is to let them rant and rave and then just shrug your shoulders and say, "You might be right. But I love this guitar anyway." If they continue spouting off, just turn away and let them entertain themselves with the sound of their own voice.

Re: Guitarists, who don't own a Gibson instrument
Epiphone player here.
I've spent hundreds of dollars upgrading every part on my Epiphone. All that's left on it are the stock Grover tuners. I've also spent hours setting it up and trying to get it to play as well as possible. After all that, it now COMPARES (doesn't even exceed) my friend's bone stock Gibson Les Paul Studio that's not even set up for me. There's a reason Gibsons cost between two and ten times as much as their Epiphone counterparts. On paper, Epis and Gibsons seem identical. It takes a real guitar player to notice the obvious difference. And besides that, who cares what other people think? You worked hard for your instrument and you love the way it plays and sounds. So enjoy it and ignore those too ignorant to see the difference.

Re: Guitarists, who don't own a Gibson instrument
kudos to you for saving up to buy yourself a nice axe! seems as though this person had a case of jealousy.
If perhaps there is a next time, ask him if he's ever actually PLAYED a Gibson...if he says 'no', say "well, you won't be playing this one either!"

It's not limited to Brand vs. Brand -- if you've got a low end Gibson, there's always that someone who'll tell you that the high end Gibsons are the only ones worth while. And if you've got some $10K Gibby, they're gonna tell you that you've spent silly money and could have gotten everything that your fancy one does in something that costs a lot less. Ultimately, Your Guitar Sucks and whatever he likes Rules. Best to simply nod your head, say, "Thanks for the input -- I'll keep that in mind next time I'm buying a guitar" while trying very hard to use the Jedi mind trick that makes his dick fall off. |

Re: Guitarists, who don't own a Gibson instrument
Usually people are upset that you have a nicer whatever than they do. That can range from you car, your woman, your guitar, or your dick. Unfourtunatly you can't make everyone happy but you can make yourself happy. That is where it starts. Ignore it if you can but by all means DO NOT FEEL ASHAMED. They have the problem not you.

Re: Guitarists, who don't own a Gibson instrument
It seems to me that people who bash Gibson are the ones who want them but can't afford them.
They seem to take pleasure in harassing people who own one to make themselves feel better. That statement may seem harsh but it is the truth - corksniffing aside. |

Re: Guitarists, who don't own a Gibson instrument
Yeah, there are people that piss on you for having a Les Paul. They're like, "Man, why would you play such a heavy ass, old man guitar? How can you even reach those high frets with that damn heal getting in the way!" "You should be playing a USA Jackson. They're light, awesome quality, and you can burn all day long on that man with no effort. Not just on a few frets but all the frets!" or "Gibson's quality is s*&t. Over priced pieces of s*$t. You should play an Ibanez. All the good guitar players know that. That's why they play Ibanez."
Insert whatever light weight shredder guitar they are hard for as they try to bad mouth your Les Paul. |

Re: Guitarists, who don't own a Gibson instrument
I always didn't care, I get 'You should play a strat' quite a bit, then I just point behind me at the one I have. Normally I have whatever guitar they say is better and I go into detail as to WHY I'm using a Les Paul/Baretta/Strat/Jazzmaster/Tele.
Or I tell them I like sounding like shit and playing like shit, it's my style. |

Re: Guitarists, who don't own a Gibson instrument
Dude, you should have gone epiphone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
![]() ![]() ![]() They are totally way better than anything Gibson makes, even though Gibson owns Epiphone and uses cheaper parts on them! YEAH!!!!!!!!!!! ![]() ![]() You should have looked him straight in the eye, winked, and said something pretending you were deaf. One of my buddies did that when someone made a comment about his epiphone SG. Looked him straight in the eye, winked, and said "Do you like my guitaring?" with the "deaf" accent...the guy replied: "Uhhh...uhhh..." and walked away... That was probably the hardest I've ever had to restrain laughter

Re: Guitarists, who don't own a Gibson instrument
They're great guitars. They wouldn't have been popular for so long if they hadn't. So by getting your (first) Gibson at a young age you've got a good guitar for life, and if you ever did need to sell it you won't have lost much money. Not sure you can say that about some of the other guitars are popular at the moment.
Also they look really cool and sound great. That is the most important thing. |
