LP Classic Custom with P-90 Pickups

Anyone have one? Played one? I came across it while looking for something else on MF, but now I'm intrigued.
Any thoughts on single coil PUs on a custom?
Photo attached for reference.

I have an R4 Custom with a P90 and an Alnico IV. They sound marvelous clean and the P90 is killer once overdriven. But they do pickup a LOT of noise. I'd say about 1/3 of the sound can be noise, though when playing it may not seem that way.
Great aggressive sound unlike any other single coil or humbucker. The constraints are they pickup any electromagnetic field. My outside lights turn on when a critter runs through the yard and the pickups hear this and get noisier. It is a battle. There is usually one or two relatively quite spots in a given p-lace , but you have to find them and contort into them.

Lots of players love P90s and discount the noise as just something that goes with the territory. I guess it does.

Heres a pic of mine. It is an Historic R4:

That's one beautiful guitar! Thanks for including the pic.

and from what you're describing, the sound of the P-90 is exactly what I'm looking for (and I wouldn't mind the extra noise)

I'm not sure what price I could find in the open market for the Classic with the P-90s, but MF had it for $600 less than the one with '57s.

Thanks for the feedback. Sounds like I need to seriously consider it. If they're anything like yours, they're gorgeous,

If so, then there goes the noise, but then they are not P90's. They would be P100's. They have some other version too, an H90 I believe. It is a P90 with a dummy coil beneath it.

According to the Gibson site, the classic customs come with '57 Classic and '57 Classic Plus PUs.
It doesn't show the version with the two P-90s, which is what I saw on MF, so I'm just going by what I saw there.
It's interesting how MF features versions not shown on the official Gibson site.

No, all is right. The guitar that started the thread is GOTW #28 from last year.

Call Saul at Centre City Music. He'll get you a much better price and a hand picked Custom, to boot. He's my 'go-to' guy for all Gibsons, now...

Re: LP Classic Custom with P-90 Pickups

I have one of the Classic customs with the P-90's. The week #28 Guitar that you are refering too. The guitar itself is very attractive considering the price. Personally I like the sound of P-90's so that was in no way a drawback for me but they are not to everyone's taste. Fit and finnish on mine was very good. I will say one thing about it, its dam heavy. I'v picked up a few studios and a couple of standards and this feels far heavyer than those. As for tone and playabliity.... I can't really say as I am just learning how to play

The only thing that may put you off is the binding. It's a 5 layer, white, black, white, black white binding. The thing is, it's not white, it's very orange to be honnest. I think its Gibson's sad attempt at making the guitar seem like its older than it is but they missed the mark on the colour. White tends to turn ivory or yellow with time, not a goldie orange.

I think the binding may be what the reviewer was talking about when he said he didn't like it.

I will try and take some pic's and post them in a day or so. Sadly I don't own a digital camera so I'm gonna take some shots with my cameraphone and see if they turn out.

Would love to see pics if you ever get the chance. this definitely sounds like a guitar I'd be interested in. A classic custom for this price? come on! the one thing I was wondering about was the sound quality of the P-90s, and from what I've read from the responses, they would work well for me. Thanks for the reply!
