Am I being played? Nickel vs Chrome
I won a Gibson bridge and tailpiece, ADVERTISED AS NICKEL, on ebay.
Just received it and it looked just like chrome. I held it next to my original Les Paul nickel bridge and tail and it doesn't have that "silver" color to it. I emailed the seller telling him I won a nickel set and received a chrome set - and this was his response: "Hi, Nickel and chrome are the same thing. This is how Gibson lists them on their website." Is he full of it????? |

Re: Am I being played? Nickel vs Chrome
Before I list his ebay username and hurt his sales, I'll see if he will work with me on it. Maybe he just doesn't know there is a difference.
If not, I'll post his username to warn anyone else who may buy from him - and give negative feedback - never had to do that before...

tell him you want a refund and you'll return them. If he thought they were the same thing, why did he advertise them as nickel?

Re: Am I being played? Nickel vs Chrome
Here is the BS/drama I am going through. Just thought I would share
Me ![]() This is not correct. I just got off the phone with Gibson Customer Service and chrome and "nickel are two different animals" per Gibson. Your listing is not accurate. Chrome is more shiney (mirror like)and nickel has a silverish look to it. I just payed for an item that was not listed correct. What can be done here? Them Well, I'm sorry, but I've been a Gibson dealer since the 70's and this is a nickel pickup that came stock out of a Gibson guitar that is listed on Gibson's official web sight as nickel. The pickup was listed correctly. Me ![]() First of all, this is NOT a pickup we are talking about. Second, nickel is not the same as chrome. I won a NICKEL (as advertised) bridge and Tailpiece, and you sent me a CHROME bridge and tailpiece. This is FALSE advertising. I would like my money back and then I will send them back or I will take this matter higher up as fraud! Call Gibson: 1-800-4GIBSON and ask them. Them Ok, Bridge. Chrome is darker, almost blackish in color. Gibson rarely uses it on anything. Nickel is silver in color like the part you received. If your saying I'm false advertising then your saying Gibson is false advertising on their web site. If you don't want the part then just send it back and never shop on my site again. I only want people who actually know their parts bidding on my items.

Re: Am I being played? Nickel vs Chrome
Absolutely not the same thing. You use chrome to cover or plate a metal, such as brass or copper or some other crap... it's useless. If I'm not mistaken, chrome may contain a small percentage of nickel, which gives it a slight magnetic draw. The tint of chrome depends on what it's covering and the amount of plating. Grab something chrome and you should be able to scratch through it.
Nickel is a metal in itself, it should have a much stronger magnetic draw to it. Usually, in my experiences, Nickel actually has a blueish tint, and if you try to scratch through it, you will get Nickel underneath. BTW, I used to work at a metal recycling plant 5 years ago, and worked there for 2 years. Nickel was like gold, fetching a very high price. All the chrome crap was just that... crap. |

Re: Am I being played? Nickel vs Chrome
Gibson should be willing to send you something in writing to help resolve this matter.

Re: Am I being played? Nickel vs Chrome
Ummm, he keeps talking about how the Gibson site says they are the same, but clearly it doesn't:
http://www.gibson.com/en-us/Division...%20Tailpieces/ That being said, I have seen lots of different nickel plating that looks different. Some are more yellow than others. He is an idiot (called it a Web Sight instead of Web site), but it's POSSIBLE that it is nickel, but just doens't match. |

Re: Am I being played? Nickel vs Chrome
Nickle is a coating that is put first on an object, Chrome on the other hand is just a brighter that brighten the nickle to a shinning finish. When you get a chromed item it's is nickled and then chromed, when you get a nickled item it is not chromed.

Re: Am I being played? Nickel vs Chrome
Chrome & Nickel are two entirely different animals.
Neither are solid, they're plated. Chrome = shiny Nickel = dull I'm in the custom metals biz - chrome is a cheap knock-off of polished stainless steel, - well, maybe I shouldnt put it that way, solid polished stainless steel would cost and arm and leg for guitar parts and weigh a ton. nickel is nickel, just like you would think, little round things in your pocket that equal 5 cents, and is a soft metal opposed to S/S. I wouldnt think there would be a huge difference (if any) in cost as far as plating goes. But you were told you were getting one, and you got the other. so, that's FALSE ADVERTISING - and if the dip-shit seller doesnt know the difference, he's and idiot and has no biz selling those products. thanks for letting me vent. |

Re: Am I being played? Nickel vs Chrome
Eddie,
That link says it all! Thanks! I'm going to send him that link. Chrome is definitely what he sent me. My LP Standard has the Nickel. Holding the new set next to my nickel set is night and day. The set he sent me is as chrome as chrome gets - no way it is nickel. When he stated "blackish", he might have been thinking of the black chrome and maybe is getting the nickel mixed up with shiny chrome. Anyway, I will try and have him refund my money. Thanks for all the input. This forum rocks

Re: Am I being played? Nickel vs Chrome
I love nickel plating. It seems to be more blue and cool *as in colour spectrum* than Chrome. Could just be me. It also ages better and turns yellow, and is thinner. Has less of an impact on your pickups than chrome, according to some of the winders on here.

Re: Am I being played? Nickel vs Chrome
I'm a Machinist/Engineer by trade and I can tell you for certain, Nickel and Chrome are NOT the same. I also own/have owned several Gibsons and by Gibson's definitions, Nickel and Chrome are NOT the same.

Re: Am I being played? Nickel vs Chrome
Ok, I must be on old thread week, Being an avis car-resto person I can tell you one thing for sure-make that 2 things, nickle and chrome are not the same thing, However..... The quality of chrome is based on it's nickle content aka the higher nickle content the better quality the chrome is, Nickle content is required to keep the final product from pitting and peeling both on car bumpers and guitar parts, no comment on the e-bay guy

Re: Am I being played? Nickel vs Chrome
Nickel and chrome are completely different. In standard plating practices, nickel is a sub layer plated to a part to enhance it's resistance to pitting (corrosion). Chrome is the top layer that has a brighter finish. Nickel parts endure much better than chrome. Nickel does have a silver appearance to it. Both can be polished to a mirror like finish. This guy has no idea what he's talking about.

also sounds like yo uknew what you wanted and were bidding on. but, without posting the details of the auction its hard to say who is right. the nickel vs chrome question has been answered many times in this thread, and yes they are different enough of an option for one to be called nickel and one to be called chrome. they are not the same. |

Re: Am I being played? Nickel vs Chrome
Yeah, I posted this a while back. I ended up buying a Tonepros set (which is awesome!!) in nickel - real Gibson (actually Gotoh) nickel color. The quality is perfect! It is way different than the CHROME one that guy sent me (and YES, he did advertise nickel and sent me chrome). I ended up keeping the chrome one - tired of dealing with the guy. I am going to sell it soon on ebay myself LISTED AS CHROME (make my money back or make a little).

Re: Am I being played? Nickel vs Chrome
Hmmmm, I just looked on ebay to see if that guy was still selling/advertising nickel bridges - and he has a few all listed as "chrome" now. Imagine that!
When I bought mine, he was selling a few all listed as nickel. |
