Gibson VS Epiphone
Hey guys,
I was considering purchasing a new guitar, I have closed my list down to : 1) Gibson Les Paul Studio Faded , 2) Epiphone Les Paul Custom , 3) Epiphone Les Paul Ultra 2 or 4) Gibson SG Standard. Which of these guitars would be the best for my style?? (I play Classic Rock and Blues) And is the Gibson Les Paul Studio Faded Worn Cherry a "limited edition"?????

Re: Gibson VS Epiphone
If you can, play them all, go with the one you like the best. If you can't, the Studio faded is a safe bet, and no, it's not limited.

Re: Gibson VS Epiphone
Well, this isn't really a style kind of decision, but more of a budget type of decision. Which can you truly afford, and which do you like the most? Do you like the Gibson standard because of the look and feel of it, or do you like it because it says Gibson on it? Really, your best bet would be to try out a few in person and see if it affects your decision any.

Re: Gibson VS Epiphone
I have played many guitars. I will say that the name on the headstock does not dictate how well the guitar plays. Of course in general, the Gibson quality is better than the Epiphone. But for me, I sold my Gibson Les Paul Standard and bought a Epiphone Elitist 1957 Goldtop. Again, this was my personal story but I think you should play the guitar before guying.

Re: Gibson VS Epiphone
Any of those guitars will do rock & blues. Of those four, I'd personally go with a Gibson SG Standard.

Re: Gibson VS Epiphone
Wow, it looks like Timmeh and I agree on something once again.
![]() Another vote for the SG Std. And no matter what the Epi guys say, a Gibson is ALWAYS better. No, I'm not joking this time.

Re: Gibson VS Epiphone
From that list I'd go with the SG.
But, for the price of a new SG Standard you should be able to find a used Les Paul Standard. I would be looking in that direction. |

Re: Gibson VS Epiphone
Gibson SG for sure.
Customs are overprices, Ultra II's are stupid, and The SG standard is cooler than a studio model.

Re: Gibson VS Epiphone
The SG. It is the only one that is not a compromise in my opinion. Its the real deal!
#2 Faded Studio. Damn nice LP but will likely need a setup. (The SG may for that matter.) |

Re: Gibson VS Epiphone
My vote is for the Gibson Les Paul Studio Faded.
If not that..... then get the Gibson SG Standard. They're only $1200 brand new with hardshell case right now which is a great deal I think!! If not that ..... then get the Epi Les Paul Custom! Sweet guitar!! If not that....... I'm not sure........ I don't really care for the Epi LP Ultra IIs. That peizo acoustic sound doesn't appeal to me at all. And that wierd switching on that back....... I don't know. P.S. all of these guitars will work for the style you're wanting to play......... so that doesn't really matter.

Then you've never played an Epiphone Elite/Elitist!!! To the OP, I'd go with an actual "Faded Studio", the one with the maple cap if you can find it. The one you're mentioning is the Vintage Mahogany to get technical, which is still nice. BUT, like others have mentioned, I'd get the SG Standard or regular Les Paul Studio over any of those. Especially used if you can find the right one. You'll be well under a grand on either the SG Standard, or the Studio!! For some reason, any 04' LP Studio that I've played has been killer!!!! I'd shoot for an early 06' or older Studio in the Alpine White/Gold Hardware with the Ebony fretboard. Looks like an LP Custom, is only slightly weight-relieved, and plays so nice with the ebony board!!! Thats my vote!!!

Re: Gibson VS Epiphone
i owned a Gibson SG Standard. now i have a Gibson Les Paul Studio. i loved how the SG felt and played but its tone was 2nd to the LP. imo, the LP is a much fuller/warmer sounding guitar
but go play both, buy what YOU like Gibsons are better guitars then Epi's but not everyone has that much extra money to spend on a Gibson. ps, those Faded Gibson SGs are killer, id like to get one someday

Re: Gibson VS Epiphone
I had an Epi LP Standard that really was/is a very good guitar. I've gigged with it and it sounds great. Not long after I brought my Gibson home,it was clear that I would probably not play the Epi again. So I sold it to my neighbour who still has it. In fact, if he ever wanted to sell it, I might buy it back from him.
Bottom line, an Epi can be a great guitar, but it won't be a Gibson. If you want and can afford a Gibson, get one. Because even if you buy an Epi, you'll still want a Gibson. |
