Bridge/Saddle set up

I was reading thru a guitar repair book and it said for maximun tone and sustain to adjust the height of the saddle high enough so the strings dont touch the rear edge of the bridge. Keeping the angle as sharp as possible

I can get it set up that ways for the ADGB strings but no matter what I do the E's are hitting Due to the arch in the Top. Only way to do it is to raise the saddle way up on a negitive break. (above the bridge)

Sounds like a crock of crappola to me.

How are your break angles in compared to strings touching the rear of the bridge

Re: Bridge/Saddle set up

Well, if your question is about setting the stopbar height.

Depending on neck angle, you may need to raise the tailpiece in order to have a decent action and have the strings clear the back of the bridge. I used spacers on mine so that I could raise the tailpiece and still have the studs tight.

Another way is to top-wrap the strings...

Oh, man where did you get those spacers? Such a great way to gain the body-contact sustain with minimal saddle resistance!

Re: Bridge/Saddle set up

I came up with the idea myself, but others may already have thought of it independantly it's not exactly rocket-science :lol

A friend made them for me from some 1/2" aluminium bar. Drill a 5/16" (8mm) hole down the middle and use a parting tool to cut them to length. Mine are about 3/16" (5mm) high.

Another way is to use small stack of 5/16" washers.

Another one I heard of was to put a piece of dowel into the bottom of the stud insert and tighten the stud onto it.

There are a lot of top-wrap fan out there too...

Re: Bridge/Saddle set up

before I started top wrapping (and dropped the TP all the way down), I used a couple of beveled washers from an old set of gold Grovers under the TP on my Custom. Seemed to work just fine.

Re: Bridge/Saddle set up

thanks all

I was talking about the Stop bar. I always call it a saddle for some reason and it always stuck in my vocabulary.

I'll see if the wrap around works.

Ive been meaning to try that fo a while now and since in due for strings ill give it a go this week

if not I'll try the washer trick

Re: Bridge/Saddle set up

I have mine set all the way down to the body and top wrap the strings. It works so well, that I forget it's top wrapped. Doesn't change the feel of playing in any way. IMO.
