NGD!!! 2008 made 2002 Spec Les Paul Standard

Oldie, but goodie... Been sitting in the store for about 2 years now, and I managed to pick it up at a sale event. Really took a chance too! They don't allow testing during the sale event. You buy "as is". I was damned lucky, I must say. I straped it in just now, played it, and my spine was vibrating when I played around the 5th frets. Its very resonant, and sustains madly...

Surprised to find a top like this still hanging around... Maybe not many like not so heavily flamed flatsawn tops like me... heh...

It's a lightburst...

What's in this one? anyone know? Burstbucker Pros? I like them quite a lot, whatever they are... Wondering if anyone can shed some light on this. Was contemplating changing bridges if the guitar didn't pay right. But now, it seems that no modifications are needed!

It's also oddly light for a non-chambered LP... It's lighter than my Slash GT!

Not this one... It's 2002 spec, and my dealer had quite a few of these. Swiss Cheese. This one happened to be lighter than most...

Lemme get more pics soon. hope the sun is out tomorrow.

Lucky for you, and my wallet, that I never set foot in the shop you picked this bad boy.

Very nice top.

Congrats

Congrats that's a beauty!

Just out of curiosity, if it turned out to be chambered would you still want it ?

Not questioning what you are saying but the pre-2008 2008 standards are all 2002 spec, even the chambered ones. Gibson uses that term to describe the guitar from 2002 prior to the latest incarnation.

Re: NGD!!! 2008 made 2002 Spec Les Paul Standard

Sounds like a pre 2008 spec (no Plek, PCB, or Asymmetric neck) 2008 Standard to me. I have one too - great score, and yes, it is chambered.

if it were me, i would get rid of it if its chambered. that ruins everything for me and the guitar wouldnt sound as good after that.

to the OP, you're guitar is chambered. no big deal though, if she sounds great (and i know she looks great, hot damn!) then you have a keeper! congrats!

Hello Goldtop75,

Gibson's in house designation for this guitar is 0208.
This model is still in production for volume dealers.
I own one and it's chambered which is fine.
Great guitars they are.

Cheers.

Re: NGD!!! 2008 made 2002 Spec Les Paul Standard

What LPV said is my understanding of the term "2002 spec" as well. In 2002, Gibson changed a few small things on the Standard, things like the binding through the horn now exposing a bit of the maple cap. When Gibson first started chambering in late 2006, everything about the guitar remained the same except for the chambered body.

Having said that, there is always a possibility that Gibson made a run of 2008 swiss cheesed Standards for a dealer. Out of curiosity, I called Gibson and asked them this...but the dealer would have to order A LOT of them in order to get them. So, unless this dealer bought 25+ 2008 swiss cheesed Standards, yours is most likely chambered. The fact that yours "happened to be lighter than most" should give you an indication...

There is nothing wrong with chambered Les Pauls...except for d*ckheads like FennRx.
Different league, I know, but I'll put this chambered R8 up against anybody's solid/swiss cheese Les Paul.

If it's a 2008, it's chambered.

Re: NGD!!! 2008 made 2002 Spec Les Paul Standard

Hahaha... I think you guys are right. I tapped the body in certain areas, and discovered that it is indeed chambered. Oh well. Having heard how it sounds and sings before discovering this changes how I felt about chambered LPs because I HAVE played quite a few at the stores and owned by friends that really didn't sound or play as nice. This one at least is very very nice... It's definately a keeper!

It also came with a 50s neck, which is a startling revelation for me. I always thought and felt that 50s necks were too big, and I always preferred 60s necks. But after playing it for a while, I must say the 50s neck is actually rather compfy!

Does anyone know about them pickups?

VERY nice!! I love my chambered but I played a Traditional that kicked butt yesterday also. Most of the time, a slight tweak of the amp settings make it a non-issue. I am with you, I prefer that top to one that has PRS style figuring! Great find!

Goldtop75, that's a very sweet top.
I'd much rather look at that guitar than Bole's ugly ass Trad Pro.

This should be an automatic answer generated by MLP every time someone questions chambering. The post should then be locked.

Question now is, whether I should drill in that guard. Looks a bit naked...
