Toothpaste = shine?

Hey there!

Is it true that applying a bit of toothpaste and polishing it, will result in a subtle sheen on a satin finish, as for example on my Les Paul Standard Faded?

Re: Toothpaste = shine?

i think it would do the opposite...it would dull the shine because it's an abrasive.

Re: Toothpaste = shine?

Toothpaste is abrasive, VERY abrasive to things such as guitar finishes. So don't do it. Besides, your guitar will wreak of mint.

Re: Toothpaste = shine?

I was inspired by this thread: Virtuoso for Faded?? I got another way...

And the only way I am able to get ahold of the gloryfied Virtuoso Polish, is to get it shipped from the US to here. (Denmark)

I once heard mayonnaise & cig ashes mixed together take
the water stains of coffee tables I think it was on a tv program?

But anyway, I agree, do NOT put toothpaste on your LP.

Re: Toothpaste = shine?

Toothpaste IS a polish, but it's far too abrasive for a guitar finish. You can polish metal with it though.

If you wanted a shiny guitar, you should have bought a shiny guitar.

Re: Toothpaste = shine?

You could consider a refinish with nitro on your faded Standard.

Re: Toothpaste = shine?

+2 toothpaste will polish the tail piece but not the body. But like was said earlier it would be minty fresh.

I never wanted a shiny guitar, I don't really like the look of a new high-gloss guitar.

But I've seen some people apply Virtuoso Polish on their faded guitars, which resulted in a finish that had a subtle sheen that resembled the finish of a vintage worn guitar that had had a high-gloss clearcoat finish back in it's day

Re: Toothpaste = shine?

Anyway, I'll trash the toothpaste idea and perhaps order some Virtuoso Polish, or continue my search for an alternative

I'd get the Virtuoso Cleaner too and apply it before the Polish. That's what I use to remove fingerprints and any other schmutz.

Re: Toothpaste = shine?

Hi iBrows,
if you don't have access to Virtuoso you can try:
DUNLOP FORMULA 65 POLISH KIT - U.K. International Cyberstore

I've been using that to achieve that "vintage shine" on my faded les paul. Originally I bought that kit to even out the shine - as some spots of the top we're starting to shine because of hand wear + sweat and others we're still dull and that did not look that good. I don't have pictures here, but the results I got were quite similar than what people have achieved with Virtuos stuff.

At some point I also used Turtle wax rubbing compound to get the lacquer surface more even (=more shine). However, I cannot recommend this since I'm not sure if it's 100% silicone free or not. On my guitar it worked well.

Hope this helps.

Seriously, be happy for your faded as it is. It's a great guitar and polishing won't make any difference. If you wanna upgrade it in some way then concentrate on upgrading the tonal qualities of the guitar.

Re: Toothpaste = shine?

@ -JiiTee-: Thanks for your reply, but I've already ordered the Virtuoso Kit.
Though I would LOVE to see some pics of your polished LP

@ Jonathan: I am very happy for my LP as it is, I just want to experiment and see what kind of results I can get with a little polish, and on the pics I've seen with Virtuoso polish, it does make a great vintage sheen.

Anyhow, I'll make a thread with pics when I've done my makeover, and then hopefully it will look good
