Re: why do we need so many guitars

If I dont spend my money on gear I spend it on hookers, or various other parts for my car.

Seriously its what I do with my extra cash. Otherwise Id piss it away or at least thats what I used to do.

Re: why do we need so many guitars

This is almost too much for me:

I never want to have so many guitars they don't get played enough. Each guitar needs months of playing time to break into your hands. When you have 20 or 30 you don't have time enough to spread your attention around. And I'll never understand you guys that need five of the same guitar.

That said, I will get one of every guitar I ever wanted. I may not be a rock star but I have enough money and gigs to justify adding the Rickenbacker 12 string I've wanted since high school. And thanks to overtime, Wednesday I'll finally get my hands on that Musicman Axis I've been wanting since Eddie did the video for "Poundcake".

Guitar Collecting is no different. Best part is you get to play'em all.
exactly

for me is the convenience of having different tunings available, all of them have different feel, they all inspire something different when I get in music writing mode.

but like already said above "because we can"

Nice, succinct collection. Looks like you've got your basics covered: a LP, a 12-string Ric, a Strat and a Tele. Now all you need is something with P-90s, something with mini-hums, and something with a Floyd Rose or a Kahler. And one more with EMGs, if that floats your boat.

Like I said earlier, the problem for me is that I always have backup for the guitars I use live, so if it was my collection, I'd need two of each.

My name is Moff40 and I'm a guitar addict...

Because. Tastes change quite frequently.

I'd like to have a back-up for my Les Paul.

BECAUSE WE CAN. That is the short answer. For the extended answer please consult 'addiction' in the dictionary.

Re: why do we need so many guitars

None of us actually need even one guitar--we really don't.

So that's that one.

But that's not the question most people are answering.
If you want more guitars, and can afford them--go for it.

As for the OP's list--you left off archtop and 12 string & classical and bass.

Really, it depends on what you do with them, what you can afford, etc.

Re: why do we need so many guitars

I have several for many reasons, I have some that are set up for altered tunings, some just for certain songs, and others that are just some of my favorite guitars to play.

For a road gig I will take 3-4 LP's (for example when I was playing club dates in Japan I carried 5-6 guitars), but usually I will only take 1-2 guitars out.

It depends on my mood as well............ I'm kinda eccentric.

Re: why do we need so many guitars

I play in a couple (okay, a few) different bands, and I've found that certain guitars have gravitated to certain bands. I use my Ibanez Artists for a Clapton project I'm in, when I play with the karaoke band I have to take a shred guitar with a Floyd or a Kahler for the 80s stuff, when I play with the Hippie boys out East, I gotta take a Tele and the pedal steel. If I'm doing blues, I need an LP and a Strat. Recording calls for the Variax and one or another of the acoustics, plus whatever electrics will get the soloing job done.

When I play with my band Nurse Diesel, all bets are off and i go with four or five a night - whatever I feel like playing on a given night.

I've been looking for a new amp lately - and believe it or not, I made a failed play for another guitar over the weekend. I just can't stop myself.

Re: why do we need so many guitars

If it is various partners asking why you need so many guitars, then my favourite answer is this. "I need the guitars so that I have something to do between the time when you said you'd be ready to go out, and the time when you're actually ready to go out".

On the other hand, I'm clearly going to end up with a large guitar selection. But I'm a refugee from the "Other Les Pauls" section, and can buy reasonable instruments for low prices on ebay etc. I limit myself to a quite modest amount of money to spend on guitars each month, making it a cheap hobby. But because unlike hobbies where you're buying consumables or whatever, the guitars you buy stay around and start mounting up.

See, if people have to ask why, then they simply will never know, regardless the answer you offer. The OP (yeah, you paulpc) come accross as a very nice and sincere person, but unfortunately with many guilty feelings, about alot of things it would appear.

It is not a question of need. Did I need to sleep with a lot (and I mean many) of beautiful women. Never asked myself that question. If I had been the type to ask why or feeling guilty, I would have probably found myself unable to arrange such wonderful experiences for myself to the degree I desired. You only live once, and if you are not born into wealth, no need to feel guilty about having some later in life. IF there is guilt present about having nice (and plentiful) things(or experiences ), THEN you aquired it from others in what is ultimately a mindfuck to enslave you to something, someone or some idea.

Enjoy what little life you have and as long as you are not aggressing on others, you have no reason to feel guilty about feeding your desires. I mean, really, How many women are enough?

Re: why do we need so many guitars

I knew this would be an interesting thread the way it kept popping up in the New Post section. I will have to go back and read it more thoroughly.
With the exception of Mr. R9 (I don't understand why anyone would need 7 of the same guitar) like others have said, it's a lot like collecting anything else really, but here's why I collect, I think out of everything I've ever collected, guitars have brought me the most joy. The coolest part is, if you just have to have a certain one (GAS), you can always sell one or trade.
Sure I don't play all mine as much as I wish I could, but it's also like a savings account, if you buy them "right", you have available cash that's just a 5 day auction away.
Welcome to MLP.

By the way, it's really fun when you get to the stupidity level that I'm at. I am shipping out guitars and getting guitars so much that the wife doesn't even ask any more.
I brought home my new G0 the other night. I walked in, set it at the bottom of the steps and ate dinner. It sat there till almost bed time before I carried it up to my man cave and she never mentioned it.
