Right. Gibson totally stayed in buisiness off the $$ from the les pauls you bought.

Yeah, but a lot of us didn't, don't, and never will care what Slash was playing. I loved AFD for a while, but I never knew what kind of guitar he played. And I lost all interest in him not long thereafter. I still bought three LPs for myself, and one for someone else.

But for the MAINSTREAM guitar community, I think it was a big deal. Even if you count the 14 year old bedroom kids it was a big deal.

The reason most people hate on Slash is the obnoxious fans...

So this thread probably isn't helping his popularity

Just a thought...

MAINSTREAM for Gibson is people with enough disposable income to buy their guitars.

What oilpit said. Believe what you like, no need to get all worked up about it. I'm not a Slash-hater, I just think giving him sole credit for "saving the Les Paul" is quite an overstatement. I give him more credit for reviving "classic" rock than for that.

Re: a thread for all the SLASH haters

Like him or hate him (or AFD or GNR), Slash is unquestionably responsible for the revival of sales of LP's, which were largely considered irrelevant in the '80's. Probably saved Gibson's butt in the process. Gibson was close to considering closing down LP production altogether, and though it threw money at a bunch of endorsement deals and put as many guitars as it could out there, none of them generated much return buzz and sales were definitely sucking.

It was the hat, the hair and the snake-hipped singer that generated interest from a new generation.

And the photo at the beginning of the thread (Peter "Max" Baranet) is relevant because, as the OP says, without that guy's guitar and Derrig's guitar, this would likely have been an Ibanez thread. A whole lot of the guitar players who are playing LPs *since* 1986 are doing so because they saw Slash and GNR first.

Why care? Because chances are good that whatever LP you're waving now was built after 1986 and because you might not have had the opportunity to buy that guitar had Gibson dumped the line.

But to deny his influence is also crazy? Who else on that level, at that time, at that age was playing LPs? All the old big time LP cats were old, faded, and no one really cared...it was all about EVH and pointy shit.

Slash did for the LP in the 80s what Clapton did in the 60s. Sure, people had LP's when the BLuesbreakers hit, but how many people wanted one after hearing the Beanoburst?

Re: a thread for all the SLASH haters

Who the hell is Slash!

God, give me a break, I've never heard so much bullshit about him being the god to Les Pauls.

When the world forgets who Jimmy Page is, then Gibson might have a problem. Cant see that happening any time soon, and due to the fact I keep seeing every new generation with the Swan Song logo on thier shirts, well,....

Who is that Slash bloke again?

Seriously, if you like him, great.

Dont credit him for the Les Paul legend all those before him created, thats kind of arrogant and stupid. Thats like saying thelma and Louise gave the world the 1966 Ford Thunderbird convertible.

So what? You should be glad that Slash brought so many young people to guitar loving and playing... Instead of just hating him to fill your free time.

Re: a thread for all the SLASH haters

Well, Slash most likely picked up a Les Paul because he saw Jimmy Page and the likes with one in their hands.....I think Slash is a talented guitar player, better than me, no doubt. But, I also think that given the Les Paul's history before Slash, there's no way he saved the Les Paul. Interest would have come back sooner or later. The 80's were all about fads (everything Ibanez, Kramer....hair bands, tons of wrist bracelets, etc.)....Gibson discontinued the Lester before and look what happened. History repeats itself.

Re: a thread for all the SLASH haters

There's 2 points Id like to mention which some of you will find amusing.

Slash played BC Rich's and Jacksons until G N R's manager brought him a 59 Les Paul copy, because they couldn't get a guitar tone they liked for the Appetite sessions. He never even owned a Gibson before that, and to top it off, his main Les Paul isnt actually a Gibson at all!

Plus, Slash's mom used to be David Bowie's costume designer.. so that post talkin about Axl lookin like Bowie was kind of funny, considering.

by the way, what about John Sykes?? he always played LP's... Gibson even made 2 sold-out replica runs of his main guitar.

+1, I grew up in the Slash era, but Jimmy Page had more influence on me wanting a LP. not just visually, but his tone as well. I am a Slash fan, but like River said, when i listen to AFD, i hear cool badass guitars, but the tone doesnt do much for me. UYL is mixed terribly, every guitar sounds the same (Slash even says this) too much reverb and all that. Slash is cool, but Jimmy Page is #1 les paul player to me

Re: a thread for all the SLASH haters

I love slash, and is probably one of my biggest influences. But even I know that this is a little far. Yea he kinda was the very few who did play Les Pauls in the 1987s, but hell no to someone saying that he saved it. And besides I think that only 2 can live up to word "God of the Les Paul". The Man himself, Les Paul, and Jimmy Page.

Well, Maiden released the hugely successful 7th son album in 88, i think it was their first nr.1 in USA. They also headlined the Monsters of Rock festival at Donington that year, so they were undoubtedly the BIGGEST rock/metal act that year. No contest.. But H wasn't playing his Les Paul live at that time, so you're possibly right about Slash being the biggest LP player that year.. But obviously he was nowhere near the most "talked about" guitarist that year.

You're comparing the 7th Son to AFD????? GNR vs IM in 1988?? They headlined one festival in the UK??? Hugely scuessful?? Was it 28 Million copies (AFD Sales to date) sucessful??? No contest?? AFD was #1 on Billboard for 4 weeks in 1988. What else qualifies IM as the top act of the year??

Let's look at singles: Welcome to the Jungle, Sweet Child O' Mine, Paradise City vs. Can I play with Madness???

WOW
