Noise from the pickguard?

I exchanged my cream pickguard for a black one on my ebony LP Standard Traditional Pro and ever since there is a fizzing noise when I put my finger on it while playing. Strange. It looks good so I don't want to take it off. (No I do not think it's due to the change of colour...). Any words of advice?

Re: Noise from the pickguard?

I presume this is just an "acoustic" noise (not from the amp). I had a similar problem with my traditional - except that it buzzed unless I put my hand on it. The problem with mine was that the bracket was vibrating against the underside of the guard - the screw was tight, but there was still a gap between the end of the bracket and the pickguard away from the screw. Solution was to put a slight (and I mean slight) upward bend in the bracket, just enough so that when the screw is tightened the bracket presses up against the plastic of the guard all the way along. Hope this makes sense - might be nothing to do with your problem, but it fixed mine.

One other thing to watch for is that the screw fastening the bracket to the guard can get very close to the body, and can mark it if you bash it when playing hard. Could be this that's buzzing when you press it? I shortened the screw on mine and made the nut thinner by filing it, to keep it clear of the body. This is worth doing anyway if it's not got much clearance.

Re: Noise from the pickguard?

Thanks, The Sentry. No, it's not an "acoustic" problem, though there's a dent under the pickguard just like you described. Itīs definitely an electric phenomenom and occurs regardless of which amp I use.

I had the same problem just the other day. It went away.

Yes, I'm serious.

it is static elec. it is quite comon on strats of cheap mfg.( my 50th aviv. squire), rub a dryer sheet over the guard b4 playing. if you are recording or playing for extended time cover it with a clear shipping tape, the tape barrier stops the static. cheers

Wow, I was going to make some dumb ass comment like "remove the nibs". Sure glad I didn't!

THANKS! I had just done a full electronics swap-out - pots, caps, pickups, switch - on my Epi LP Standard and started getting this electric humming noise when touching the pickguard. I thought I had screwed something up with the rewiring. I removed the pickguard and didn't get the noise...then searched this forum, cleaned and de-staticized the pickguard...replaced it and NO MORE NOISE!
