So go buy a $25 Harmony strat. It won't sound "good", but it will be your tone.

Re: Get your own freakin tone......

It's easier said than done to get a good tone that's all your own.
Every time I get something good, i soon find some other b#?'%+!d has got there before me.
It would be great if members here started posting sound clips.
I'm sure there are people on this forum with great individual tone.
I for one would love to hear how you all sound!

Re: Get your own freakin tone......

Yes, please do "get your own tone" or tones. I sound like "me" whether through single coils, P90's, or humbuckers... I've referenced others (say, Sean Costello - P90's and a touch of reverb) - I "get" using others are a point of reference - but when you hear "I just wanna sound like Slash. No one else - wanna sound like Slash..." - it makes me do one of these

A great quote;

"Guy walks into guitar shop, sees another guy playing and says: Damn, that guitar sounds nice. The guy puts the guitar down and says "how does it sound now?". "

Ehh, ehh?

I'm not really sure if it relates but great quote

I wouldnt really call it a slash tone. Just a good tone and jimmy page got it first. We dont like bad tones. I guess our own tone would sound like crap?

If Slash wasn't called Slash but was called Daisy Magill, would you still want the tone?

That quote made me think of Spinal Tap:

Nigel Tufnel: The sustain, listen to it.
Marty DiBergi: I don't hear anything.
Nigel Tufnel: Well you would though, if it were playing.

Well getting your own tone often starts with copying somebody else's--nothing wrong with that, as long as it doesn't end there.

Re: Get your own freakin tone......

Truth be told, the tone from your playing is your tone, regardless of whom you're trying to imitate. Even if you try to sound like another guitarist, your fingers, your mood, your skill, and your brain have the most significant impact on your tone, even if you're using the same equipment and mind-altering substances as your hero.

I agree Omar has always had his own tone and I love it!!

I have huge amounts of admiration for Omar as he is much like a modern Jimmy Page, producing both his own solo albums as well as others along with The Mars Volta. Omar is a brilliant orchestrator has he writes a lot of the music and also plays it! Major props for him! I know the music probably isn't everyone on here's thing but I stand by what I say about Omar he's great!

True, but even so, your tone is still going to be similar to some other guy's tone anyways.. I mean if you play rock n' roll/blues rock ala GNR, your tone is bound to sound something like them anyway..

And also, even with the same amp settings as your guitar-hero, you're going to sound different. (Unless you devote all your time to practice that guy's approach to guitarplaying and so forth.)

Re: Get your own freakin tone......

I think its okay to hear a guitar tone and say, "Wow! That tone is amazing. I wonder what gear he uses..." etc.. Slash has got great tone on AFD so its no surprise that people want their guitar to sound similar. If you like that tone and you go out and buy a strat and a vox amp or whatever you will be disappointed not to get that Gibson/Marshall sound.

Josh Homme said of Billy Gibbons about handing him a bunch of different guitars and amps to play with that every time he sounded like Billy Gibbons.

So you chase whatever tone you want. Your playing will sound like you.
