Les Paul Custom weight

For those of you who are lucky enough to have customs, what is the average weight of your guitar? I just got mine a few weeks ago, and its about 10 - 10.5 lbs, which seems on the high end, even for a custom. Is everyone else in the same boat? I'm just curious because I have yet to see a paul online that is that heavy. most top out at 9 - 9.5

and for those of you who have non-chambered standards, what is the weight of yours? Thanks.

Re: Les Paul Custom weight

I have a '84 Custom that weighs 10.1 lbs. I guess it has the weight relieved "swiss cheese" holes. I guess they haven't changed much over the last 20 some years.

My '74 Custom is about 10.5. I think in the 10s is an average weight for a Custom. They are always a tad heavier than a standard.

I Think you're right. My 2007 Custom is 10.2 lbs. I love the weight - the sustain is absolutely magnificent... It's like Nigel Tufnel of Spinal Tap said - "You could go and have a bite, and you'd still be hearing that note..." LOL

Re: Les Paul Custom weight

The LP customs from 1982 and older that had the 3 piece maple neck, is going to be heavier. Maple is heavier than Mahogany>>

But>>> You can have two LP's the same year same( everything) and one will weight more than the other>

reason.. The density of the wood>> I worked in a woodworking plant and we used Mahogany for the furniture we built>

You can have two pieces of Mahogany same size and thickness and one will be a considerable amount heavier,

Also the Density of the wood will change the tone of the guitar> Thats why you hear of that special guitar, that sounds better than all the rest.

3 pc Maple necks started in '75, went into the 80s I think.

Re: Les Paul Custom weight

The last year for the 3 piece maple neck was 1982 for the Custom. I think they where still putting it on the Signature models guitars...Like the BB king model.

So the 1983 Custom's should have been a bit lighter with the one piece Mahogany neck>

Re: Les Paul Custom weight

Anyone have one of the new "improved" Chambered Customs? Curious to see what they weigh in at. I don't know when they made the switch - but they changed the spec info at the Custom Shop site in late '07 to show the LP Custom as being chambered...

(edit - woops! it says "weight relieved," not "chambered." I'm an idiot - and "can't read good." )

Re: Les Paul Custom weight

it seems i was mistaken about custom weight. you guys must have some iron shoulders! before i bought the custom, i played a newer "weight relieved" standard side by side with it and it was VERY noticeable in (obviously) weight but also sound. not a bad difference, but still....

If I'm not mistaken, "customs" are not chambered. Even the new ones.

Re: Les Paul Custom weight

They make a custom chambered now guitar of the month. Its that antique blue color that looks green, and has a long neck tenon. I want one really really bad.

My 2007 custom is just short of 11 lbs.

OK - my bad - so when they say "weight relieved" they're just talking about the standard "swiss cheese" holes?

My mistake - its still business as usual, then?

Right. I believe the USA customs (non historic) are still made with the swiss cheese holes just like all the guitars have since whenever they started doing it. My new custom sure as heck isn't chambered at 11lbs!

That one is a Beauty!

Do you think they age the finish w/ UV light? I read that it really is blue under there, but they age the finish so that its a "yellow + blue = green" effect...

No Idea but I doubt its anything but custom paint. It looks really cool in person though, and they still are not as light as a standard chambered. I wish they made one with a bigby, it would so good. The color doesn't really look blue at all, but it does change shade in the light, and has sort of a pearly reflective quality to it. Its not army green at all like it looks in some pictures. They are really cool actually - I've toyed with the idea of trading one of my stadards towards one of them, but I can't bring myself to do it. I have them all playing and sounding so great.

NICE!! I lifted a 2007 custom last week in the shop and man was it all there. I really miss that hefty weight, but my back and shoulder doesn't.

My '87 weighs 9 lbs and my '88 weighs 8 lbs. Of course they are the "lite" models with the thin bodies.

I prefer my models with thin bodies.

My 2008 LP Custom '68 Reissue comes in at 9.0 lbs on the nose. My Strat (with Callaham tremelo and Sperzel tuners) is exactly 8 lbs., so not so heavy for a LP Custom

My '80 Custom weighs in at 10.5#. Never paid much attention to the wood used but it looks like a 3 piece maple neck and 3 piece top that are well matched and well hidden. The body looks like 1 solid piece with no pancake.

That's correct for a 1980 Custom.

My '82 Custom has the same construction, and it is around 10lbs, (on a bathroom scale).

Re: Les Paul Custom weight

My Gibson Zakk Wylde was HEAVY (12 lbs) and my new 2008 Custom weighs about 10 lbs and is very comfortable. I don't detect much difference in tone because they both have the EMG 81/85 active set of pickups, but the difference that I do detect is that my new Custom gives me better note definition/articulation which I really like.
