Sad Story

That my friend of mine who is a tech was telling me he almost bought a 1954 Gibson LP Custom the finish was worn off. It was on ebay but the guy lived in Midland Mi. which is about a half hour away from Saginaw. He called the guy and stopped at the guys house and played it. The guy told him he wanted $16000 for it. If he could get him a check Friday afternoon he would take it off the auction. He went and applied for a lone but out of town most of the day, got back found out he was approved but wasn't able to get to the bank before it closed on Friday. So he couldn't get it. The guitar ended up selling on ebay for $15000.

Re: Sad Story

When I bought my VM in September I played on newer studios and standards and other brands. I can offer my opinion my opinion on those but I can't for older Gibsons. My friend who is a tech could. I can try and get him to post on here. BTW that was my 1st first electric. I had played on a few before that some friends let me play on theirs.

Re: Sad Story

Hey alexx,,,,Concerning 80s LPs, there are some great LPs from these years! Especially the ones that have Tim Shaw pickups from the early 80s. These would typiclly be the Heritage Series and many of the Customs from those years. They have a full bluesy tone with alot of warmth. They are medium output with throaty tones without being harsh. Some will tell you they are the finest pickups Gibson produced. But I digress, 80s LP are quite a different animal from todays LPs. The earlier ones have slim maple necks that have a COMPLETELY different feel than mahogany. You can feel the hardness and strength of the maple, not for everyone, (I like it!). Also they are very heavy and the carved top is subtle, just like the mid to late 70s LPs. One last thing is the frets, they are jumbo, meaning VERY low and wide. Some folks don't much care for these frets, (I love them!). Chording is a breeze, bending is smooth as silk, and soloing is effortless. These are the main differences as I see it, and IMO, some of the early 80s LPs are among the best LPs made! Of course, it is always best to play a guitar before buying, but not always possible. Good luck with your decision.

1982 Custom with Tim Shaw pickups.

Re: Sad Story

alexx, you do not have the opportunity to play either of these lps I assume?? If you DO, answer is simple, choose the best player. If they both play great, choose the one you like better, (color/condition). If you cannot play these before buying, well, that makes a choice much harded. It's very hard to tell anything from those pictures. Looks like maybe the binding on the Gold Top is chipped up, or maybe it's just the picture. Other than this they both look fine as far as I can tell, again it's hard with just these two not very close-up pics. Have you asked the seller if either one has Tim Shaw pickups?? Not many Standard came with Shaws. If either one HAS Shaws I would get that one. This only my opinion, you have to choose for yourself. I don't know any of the particulars of this transaction, please proceed carefully.

Both of them have t shaws pups. The biding issue on the gold top is more of a gold finish issue. I will play them in the next friday, but I want to know best about these 81´ guitars. It appears that the red wine is in better condition, but I´ve found that beauty is not the most important think.I´m concerned about the tones....ok for hard rock? The seller said today that the red wine is in very good condition.

Re: Sad Story

First things first,,,,,,,,,,,,,I want to apoligize to dcmey for hijacking his thread, so sorry.

Second,,,alexx,,,,It seems like it's come down to these two LPs, RIGHT?? Both are 1981 Standards, RIGHT?? Both have Tim Shaw picups, RIGHT?? You're going to have the opportunity to play both before you decide, RIGHT??

It's not like you're deciding between two completely different guitars! They are going to be similar for the most part, both will be fine for hard rock tones. Pick tyhe one that feels and sounds the best to you. There's not much more to be said on the subject. Let us know the outcome.
