Transparent Black?

Do you think this:

...would look better like this?

I've been working on this for a few weeks now and am on to the final clear coat stage. My camera is broken, so I had to use the camera on my phone.

I think the amber shows the swirls better, but I like black

Re: Transparent Black?

I guess it's not really a fair comparison since I'm not finished and I'm not able to take a higher-quality photo at the moment. You can actually see the figure or 'swirls' better in trans black. You'll have to just take my word for it since my camera is broken and I had to resort to the one on my phone. I'll get some quality photo's posted when I'm finished.

No need to hold back though... let me have it if you think I deserve it! LOL!

I personally love it, even at this stage in the process. I'm not much of an orange/amber guy, but I love the figure in the top. I also finished the back in opaque gloss black instead of reddish-brown.

Where are the Ebony Mafia guys when you need them?

I believe I can see the reaper in that guitar. The eyes are between the pickups.

Re: Transparent Black?

Its even more pronounced with the transparent black. I believe you should build a theme with that guitar around it.

Re: Transparent Black?

Whoa, you're right. That's is one wild finish. I've always thought the figuring on that guitar was beautiful. How'd you run across that by the way?

Re: Transparent Black?

Thanks, man. I found it here in Seattle at Emerald City Guitars. It's a pretty incredible place... Billy Gibbons, Carlos Santana and Zakk Wylde have all been known to visit this shop when they're in town. The owner, Jay, is the coolest guy ever. It's a family owned business, so no corporate BS. He's got a '59 and '60 there right now. Amazing! <http://www.emeraldcityguitars.com/>

Re: Transparent Black?

Is it a standard model? I would think with a top like that Gibson would send it out as some unique model. What year? It'd be great to find one similar to it.

Re: Transparent Black?

To me your finish looks like a Seraphinite Specimen.

In addition to refinishing guitars I also do Lapidary work.

It's just a 1997 Classic. The mid-90's had some great tops on them, for sure.

Last - you're right, it does resemble seraphinite.

I can't to finish it and take some good photo's; what a bad time to be camera-less!

Re: Transparent Black?

I really like it more with the trans black you've applied. You've turned it into a much more unique guitar. Can't wait to see a good quality pic of it finished with everything on it.

Re: Transparent Black?

I love transparent black finishes, especially when decked out with black hardware. It's just so wonderfully metal! (Said in best Nathan Explosion voice)

Re: Transparent Black?

I also personally like the 'before' pic but as you've said it's not done yet.

It's going to look a lot different when it's been finished & polished up.
