Re: Now itīs official: chambered bodies
Yea he's not playing Customs... but his 85 Standard has got to be heavy (compared to a chambered guitar).
Look at Zakk Wylde. The man used to play a 79 Custom with a CHAIN for a strap.... He's still playing Customs from different years, most are 70's models. Hasn't killed him yet.

Re: Now itīs official: chambered bodies
Anyone know if the Les Paul Standard Limited Editions are chambered or not?? I think they started making them in about '03 or '04 and discontinued them in '06 or early '07. I absolutely love the looks/features on that line and will be looking for one that's in good shape secondhand in the near future.

Re: Now itīs official: chambered bodies
As if this topic hasn't already been beaten to death here's my take on it:
I've owned Les Pauls since 1981 starting with a Norlin custom. My expectation has always been that an LP will be heavy and somewhat dark sounding. Right now there are two of them in my line up, Standard's, 1988 and 1989 with the Circuit board pickups. I like them and I liked them better than whatever pup was stock in my custom way back when. Custom long gone. I bought a beautiful new '07 Standard. The thing was flawless in its build quality, just perfect. Stand alone it sounded really nice. So I thought. Then I started A/B ing it against the '89. For about three months. At home. At band practice. Low volume. Loud as hell. In several different Marshall, Fender and Peavey amps. I compared it in every way I could think of. I tweaked and tweaked. Bottom line. The '89 sounds like I think a Les paul should sound. Thick and woody against a sweet backdrop of real Les Paul tone. The '07 was overly bright and harsh. The guitar was too full of harsh treble tone and no amount of turning knobs down would fix it. I came to the realization that there was no 'sweet' spot to be found. The sound could not be focused no matter what I tried. Fizzy, fuzzy, grating nastiness. I really don't know if it was the Burst buckers or the wood or the chambering and I'm not about having to replace brand new pups in a brand new $2300.00 guitar to get an acceptable sound. I will add: The clean sound on both was pretty similar. Things went south quick for the '07 under any kind of overdrive situation. No pedals were ever in use. Result: 2007 Standard is gone. Personally I don't give a crap about Gibson, whether they are good guys or scumbags, their marketing policy, where they buy the wood from or anything else they may do with the various lines of Guitars they make. Why? Because there are plenty of good used ones out there all the time. |
