Re: Vintage Mahogany
Thanks.
I tried cream plastic, gold knobs, no switch ring washer, no guard, etc. but this combo looks the best to me. I just wish the hardware was nickel instead of chrome. I MAY aged the covers and hardware, but aging chrome doesn't turn out as nice. |

Re: Vintage Mahogany
I just got a brand new Vintage Mahogany. It sounds awesome
through my Marshall MG100 half stack! It's got a little fret buzz in just a couple spots around the 9th fret; nothing a luthier can't remedy. I set the intonation myself. I like the low action and I'd rather not raise the bridge. It plays very nicely. And, oh, those sweet pickups... God is good. Karl

Re: Vintage Mahogany
New pic. Put a Classic 57 in the neck and a SD Distortion in the bridge. Gosh, it's so bad ass now!!!

Re: Vintage Mahogany
It is my first Gibson and I really am enjoying it. My only other electric had been a Fender. Right away I noticed a quality difference - no loose bolts or screws as I had found on a like-priced Fender Highway One. It was setup pretty well except I got the action a bit lower with truss rod and bridge adjustments - the neck was dead straight and the intonation was spot on from the factory and still is untouched. It may amuse readers that I was surprised not to be able to adjust each string height individually as on that other make... Other than that surprise (and the stop-bar falling off with no strings attached), it was a joy to setup - the truss rod actually seems to be made for adjustment, and the quarter turn needed didn't make me feel like it was going to break anything... No sharp frets although I have never had an electric with binding - my Epiphone John Lennon (w/binding) acoustic feels a tad smoother and also has lower action, mostly due to my conservative setup adjustments on the LP I suspect.
I like the finish, or lack of one really, but I cannot tell how different it is tonally from any other LP as I haven't played any other ones. I will tell you it is very light and resonates all through the body and neck when a chord is strummed. It is fairly ''loud'' unplugged, and I play it that way frequently. If you tap it, it sounds quite hollow and most of the sound comes out of the back of it - acoustically. The tone seems very consistent as I travel up the neck and doesn't have that Fender hollowed out sound around the twelfth fret. I really had to learn to tame the humbuckers, my first. Although I like the idea of a more natural, resonant body of all mahogony, I wonder about how to care for it. The entire guitar seems bone dry. I don't want to put any oil on it, but I would hate for it to crack a few years down the road - I did oil the fretboard. Are there any recommendations for caring for the finish on these guitars? The closeup of the altered serial number shows the same grain and texture of the entire guitar. |

Re: Vintage Mahogany
Once you try one, that'll seal the deal for you. Can't go wrong with one, and used on Ebay you can get excellent deals, unless you could make it in to GC 4th sale today then you'd walk out with a steal!

Re: Vintage Mahogany
I have one in cherry and play it through a Fender Super Champ XD. No fret problems, no string buzz, just a great playing, great sounding guitar. I picked it up for $869.00 at GC. It plays and sounds better than my vintage Carvin DC 125 that I bought in 1986. I almost bought an SG, until I picked this up and found it weighs less than a standard Lester. The weight is what sealed it for me though because I have played LPs before and always got a sore shoulder after a 6 hour gig. Wow, what a guitar.

Re: Vintage Mahogany
I was going to wait for the GC Labor Day Sale before I bought a new Vintage Mahogany, but I decided to jump on it a little earlier knowing they had a 30 Day Low Price Guarantee. So I went to my local GC and checked over their inventory last Tuesday. They only had one new in the box VM with the rest being floor demos that all showed more wear than I wanted in a new guitar. I had them open up the box of the only new guitar and was I pleasantly surprised. It was a Worn Cherry with an incredible wavy grain pattern on the top. The color was darker than the Faded Cherry VMs that I had seen online. This VM looked awesome. I played it through a Vibro Champ XD. It sounded as good as it looked. I compared its sound against two Epis and the demo VMs. It sounded the best of the lot. So I bought it on the spot for $849 (they priced matched Music Friends) hoping it would go on Sale this Labor Day Weekend. Well to my surprise I checked GC web site and found the VM's were on the list for $699, case included!
I went in to GC with my receipt and they refunded me the difference without any problem. I still can not believe $699 for this guitar and case! I will post some pics when I get a chance.

Re: Vintage Mahogany
Awesome Guitars. Actually I love all LP's.
![]() Here's one I refinished. ![]() Sold on eBay. Kind of regret it now. I put a lot of blood, sweat & tears into that finish. Oh well, I'm well on my way to VMLP#2.
