It sounds as though both my '06 Studio and my '07 Classic Antique are not chambered. I could be wrong, though . . . but they still feel, play, and sound the way Les Pauls should sound . . .

Yeah, and I know where to get them for as little as $2,800 and $4,200.

Have fun at Guitar Splinter.

Here's a tip - don't go to Guitar Center. Why you would be happy paying MAP is beyond me.

Does my 1957 Gibson Les Paul Custom Black Beauty reissue *crafted in 1997* have a solid body? Maybe someone can help me out.

Zosojoe, yes. The historic reissue line came out in 1993. All historic reissues are solid unless they have a serial number that begins with "CR", making them chambered.

Re: Gibson Les Paul 101

Thank you for the information. I will be purchasing my first les Paul in the next few months, and it will be brand new. Because of budget restraints, I am limited to about $3500.00 ( Australian Dollars ). For that money I will get a Traditional flame top with AA maple top. One model has the '57 classic neck and '57 classic plus bridge. The other one has the '57 classic neck and burstbucker 3 bridge with coil splitting. At this stage I am leaning towards the second model as I will get the best of both worlds with the coil splitting.

Re: Gibson Les Paul 101

can anyone give an overview of the timeline of the les paul custom?.. if anything changed between the years of production? eg. the difference between a 90's LP custom, to a 50's, 70's, or 80's ? cheers

Yep, the long tenons came back with the Historics (and subsequently with SOME of the other Custom Shop LPs) Not even the Guitar Trader or other early reissues had them.

They have whole books on that subject, it might be a bit rough to squeeze into an internet forum thread.

Re: Gibson Les Paul 101

I just bought a 2009 Les Paul traditional and it weighs 9 lbs. 2 oz. If this thing has 9 holes drilled in it. It must be very dense wood. What you guy's think?

Your one stop shop for serial numbers, right here ---> Gibson Support - Serial Number Search
Here's the gist of it.

The typical pattern for Gibson USA Les Pauls is
YDDDYRRR
YY is the production year
DDD is the day of the year
RRR is the factory ranking/plant designation number

Gibson USA goes to a 9 digit serial number in early July 2005. The sixth number is now a batch number- batch 0 starts at the beginning of the day, and once we stamp 699, the batch number will change to 1. Basically, YDDDYBRRR

Les Paul Classics
The 1st digit indicates the year of manufacture for the 4 & 5 digit serial numbers, these were used from 1989-1999. The 1st and 2nd indicate the year of manufacture for the 6 digit serial numbers which we've been using since 2000.

Examples -
9 xxx = 1989 (4 digit number beginning with "9" used only in 1989)
0 xxxx = 1990
9 xxxx = 1999
00xxxx = 2000
05xxxx = 2005

Those beginning with "94":
In 1994, Gibson's Centennial year, many instruments have a serial number that begins with "94" for the year, with the remaining 6 digits indicating the ranking number.

Gibson Custom
2004 & newer modern Customs has a serial number like this - CSxxxxx.
Pre-2004 had 8-digit serial numbers.

Historic Reissues
M YRRR or MYRRRR
M is the model year being reissued
Y is the production year
RRR(R) indicates the guitar's place production for that year
Don't forget 60s Historics YYRRRM like: 61 SG Special and Custom RIs YYRRR1 and Historic 62 SG Standard RIs YYRRR2 and 68 Les Paul RIs YYRRR8 etc.

True what you say about CS Customs, but CSYRRR came out in 1999 for other non Historic Custom Shop Les Pauls (like CS Standards). Before 1999 they were Y9RRR. (1997-1998, which are often confused to be R7s and R8s!)

Ok...
So, why did you quote my post on wiring?
If you read post #30 here, you'd see that info on '94 serial numbers is already listed. Not to mention five posts up.

He just copied and pasted that sentence from the Gibson website.
