Newbie Jack Wiring Question

Hi all. Sorry if this is a dumb and confusing question, but I'm definitely a newbie with guitars. My bosses son had a loose jack on his Epiphone Les Paul Standard and he tried twisitng it back in (obviously the wrong thing to do). So he had me open it up and take a look at it (oh, by the way, I'm the technician at our job so I know how to do the soldering and such).
Anyways the wires were both broke off, and also one going to one of the pots (think that's what those are lol) so I had to solder them back on. After doing that, apparently the sound would come in and out and be muffled/strange sounding and then stop working at times.
So, he had me look at it again, and I tried switching the wires, since I never actually found a schematic with the same wiring as his before I was pretty much just guessing.
His has this plastic white connector that joins all the wires going throughout the guitar and to the pots, and then the one's that connect to the jack, are on a separate piece that snaps in to the plastic connector. (hope that makes sense!)
The closest thing I found for reference was this page at kentarmstrong.com. You probably have to go to just Kent Armstrong Pickups and find it since I wasn't able to click on this link http://www.kentarmstrong.com/KA_Wiring_Instructions.pdf and get right to it.
But anyways it's the Fig.2 2-b diagram. With the un-insulated braided ground wire going to the 'ring' and the insulated white wire going to the 'tip'.
So after I switched the wires and did it like that diagram, it now doesn't work at all...so the first way I did it is actually the correct way? Or what...?
My best guess would be to find that piece with the jack wires that snaps in to the other, maybe the wires were damaged internally? But, I'm not sure. And not sure where I'd even get it since I haven't seen Any diagrams/schematics with this type of wiring (with that plastic connector). So, any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

If you heated up the pot too much when you were soldering it you might have buggered it. Pots are pretty cheap maybe go and buy a new one and stick it in and see what happens.
